Type:

Copland revels in Stravinsky-inspired rhythms in this taut, no-nonsense music. Distinguished baritone Thomas Hampson sings the passionate music of Gustav Mahler. And Strauss depicts the very origin of humankind in Also sprach Zarathustra (well known to moviegoers from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey). Strauss’s brilliant symphonic poem is “loosely based” on Nietzsche’s book of the same name. As Strauss himself wrote shortly after the premiere, “I wished to convey by means of music an idea of the development of the human race from its origin, through the various phases of its development, religious and scientific, up to Nietzsche’s idea of the superman.” The Mahler songs will be recorded live for our ongoing Mahler cycle.

TGIF Social Pool & Pizza Night. All skill levels are welcome

Where: Shoreline Billiards

Date: 2007-04-20 19:00:00

Type:

No plan for Friday yet? Please come & join us for our TGIP Social Pool & Pizza Night. We can share some pizzas & play some friendly pool games while meeting new friends! This will be a TGIF Social Pool & Pizza Night. We have done that before & it was a lot of fun. As some of you may not have enough time to eat after work, I will order some pizzas to share. Please let me know, if you want to be included for the pizza dinner when signing in the event so that I know how much to order, it will probably cost about $7-$8 each per person. Below is the details of the event. Hope you can make it. (Please ignore the number of RSVP on the Upcoming.org site as I promote the events via multiple channels. Our social pool events usually have 20-25 people showed up): Date: Friday April 20th 7:00pm-10:30pm Location: Shoreline Billiards 1400 North Shoreline Blvd. #C-1, Mountain View 650-964-0780 Cost: $15/person to be collected when signing in. Ladies receive a discounted rate of $10 for this event. (About $7-$8 additional if you would like to join us for the pizzas.) If you'd like to stay & play for longer after the event finished at 10:30pm, Shoreline offers us a $5 flat fee per person til they close at 2am, 2-4 persons per table depending on how busy the poolroom gets. RSVP: Please email me @ soyeeng@gmail.com with your FULL name, email address, number of guests (if any) with their names, phone number is optional. Although RSVP is not required, it would be helpful to let me know if ou plan on coming. I don't have email access after 4pm on Sat, so if you do decide to join us the last minute, you can simply show up or call me at 415-215-0761. How it works: 1. I would rotate people around tables every 40-45 minutes. Table assignment is random, though I would make my best effort to make sure a good gender mix per table. 2. I would try to have 4 people per table. 3. Since we would be rotating, it's less confusing if everyone plays the same rules. Game rules is available on the event date. 4. When table assignment has announced, everyone has to move to their next assigned table even if you "think" you are almost done with the game, since it's impossible for every table to finish at the same time, that way it won't slow down the table rotation for everyone. 5. If you need to leave early, please let me know 10 min before you actually leave, so I would leave your name out for next rotation. How we'll find each other: Ask for Shirley's or BAPBSC group Look forward to seeing you then. To be notified with our future pool events, go to yahoo.com, then go to "group", search for BAPBSC (Stands for Bay Area Pool, Billiards, Snooker Club), then select to join/ subscribe to the club. It is FREE to join. IMPORTANT: If you don't have Yahoo ID, please email me at soyeeng@gmail.com with your email address, I would manually add you as member. Shirley

Type:

“To kick off 2008, let’s try an experiment. I own a small collection of 35mm feature films, mostly '60s and '70s trash. Over the years, I’ve acquired a bunch of individual reels from films—but not the complete films. So, tonight, we’ll show a 90-minute movie—except it will be composed of four or five different films. The titles we’ll mash together include Snuff, Love Camp 7, Sexy Proibitissimo and other oddities. I have no idea if this is going to work, so we’re reducing the admission price to an el cheapo $5 for all seats … so, wtf, take the plunge!”—Joel Shepard, Film/Video Curator Public Info: 415-978-2787 or www.ybca.org $5 regular, students, seniors, teachers & YBCA members

Minus the Bear

Where: Bimbo's 365 Club

Date: 2008-04-29 08:00:00

Type:

Though the song titles may lead one to believe that they're a novelty act, Minus the Bear provides polished, shrewdly arranged songs. Finger-tapped guitar riffs mixed with catchy melodies and unexpected time changes keep listeners interested and entertained. Minus the Bear has built a loyal fan base through extensive touring and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The Velvet Teen is a rock trio from the northern Bay Area whose songs range from the beautiful to the bittersweet, with soaring countertenor melodies, tastefully delicate harmonies and a unique sound not to be missed. P.O.S. (born Stefon Alexander), is a founding member of Doomtree. His solo efforts include two albums, 'Ipecac Neat' and 'Audition.' He's also contributed to Building Better Bombs. Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental band from Chicago. It would be tough to imagine that a band would be able to develop its own unique presence and innovation with such solid groundwork in the instrumental genre. However, Russian Circles does bring something new to the table. Their songs feel incredibly narrative and linear. There is no angular flash or mathematical flair. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea. They are gargantuan in scope. They flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost. Variety is no gimmick and they are a band that does not just vacillate within an achieved sonic identity.

Ecstasy with the Pomegranate by Ilkhom Theatre presented by ...

Where: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Forum

Date: 2008-05-15 20:00:00

Type:

A visual street theater of metaphor and clownery, the world renowned Ilkhom Theatre of Uzbekistan began in 1976 as a renegade theater under the strict Soviet regime, existing without state censorship or subsidies. Now citizens of an independent republic, their work is no less controversial. As part of the Big Idea: Identity Shifts series, Ecstasy with the Pomegranate is a lush dance theater work on an epic scale inspired by the iconographic 1930s “Bacha Boys” paintings by Alexandr “Mumin” Nikolayev. Bacha, danced by young boys and men, was Turkistan’s only traditional dance form and was off limits to women. When the Soviets invaded the former Turkistan and obliterated all Islamic traditions, they effectively erased Bacha. Under Stalin, Mumin memorialized the form in sensual, spiritual paintings. Ecstasy brings to life these extraordinary images, capturing a male eroticism once embraced by a culture that now outlaws homosexuality. Performed in Russian with English subtitles, Ecstasy with the Pomegranate unearths the tumultuous period of transition between the rule of the Imperial Russia and Soviet Russia in Turkistan between 1915 and 1917. Beautiful, funny, subversive, Ecstasy revives history to illuminate contemporary themes of nationality, religion, Central Asian history, Russian turmoil, homoeroticism, love, and ultimately, the struggle for freedom of identity and expression. This gorgeously crafted collaborative project joins the forces of the Ilkhom Theatre, celebrated African American choreographer David Rousséve, director, the late Mark Weil, and composer Artyom Kim.
