A Silver Mt. Zion, also know as Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band, is a post-rock band formed in 1999 by Godspeed You! Black Emperor musicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. Unlike Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion's music often features vocals. Singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt deals in emotionally charged, intelligent folk rock. A paraplegic who was injured in a car accident when he was 18, the contemporary acoustic folk of the Athens, GA, native has gained him the admiration of such artists as Michael Stipe, Hootie & the Blowfish and Widespread Panic.

Nextbook's Readings & Performances series presents the most innovative and original new voices in Jewish literature in lively, unusual settings. In his "picture stories," Ben Katchor turns the American city into a wonderland of tin ceilings, illuminated storefronts, and unusual enterprises: the Senseless Elaboration Parlor, the Sublime Vision Center, the Mortal Coil Mattress Store. The first cartoonist to win a MacArthur "genius grant," Katchor is the author of The Jew of New York, Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer, and The Cardboard Valise. He has also collaborated on several works of musical theater, including The Carbon Copy Building, The Rosenbach Company, and The Slugbearers of Kayrol Island. His comic strips have appeared in The New Yorker, The Forward, Metropolis, and other newspapers and magazines. In his public appearances, Katchor elevates the slide show to a form of performance art. $8 / $6 student with ID

Based in the Netherlands, “Leine & Roebana keep pushing their dancers to the limits, to the point where control and perfection could easily turn into chaos and failure. It is called virtuosity” (Carnet). The company performs Sporen a work that confronts different movement approaches of the body that have become manifest in their work. Constantly switching between multi-layered physical counterpoint, aggressive attack, line distortion, ambiguous simplicity, visual complexity and organic deconstruction, their movement style is as demanding as it is natural. “Working at the extreme, they perform intriguing movements while striving for beauty, which appears at unexpected moments” (Dance Magazine). Co-presented with Reston CenterStage. Funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Additional funding provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Ford Foundation and JP Morgan Chase. This engagement of Leine & Roebana is a DC Performing Arts Presenters Initiative project, a partnership between the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation funded by the Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program. TICKETS: $22 general admission; $17 members, students, teachers (PreK-12), professional artists & seniors; $8 for children 17 & under – unless noted otherwise.
