Description Free and open to the public - and followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments - and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above. Distant Closeness: Flickr and the Changing Sociality of Images ABSTRACT: Flickr is much more than a useful tool for sharing photos: it is helping to change the role of images in people's lives, in their interactions, and their individual and collective construction of self. This is what we are finding in an on-going study of Flickr users, part of a larger project aimed at understanding (1) how new photo making and sharing technologies relate to prior and emergent photographic practices and (2) what the enthusiastic adoption of these new technologies tells us about the adoption and adaptation of new technology more generally. Personal photography is extraordinarily widely-practiced and highly valued. Digital photography and online sharing have been very successful. Flickr is a new form of online sharing which has also been quite successful. We've been studying non-professional photographers in general (film and digital), cameraphone uses, and now Flickr and ZoneTag users to see how changing image-making and sharing technologies support and illuminate prior practices and purposes and enables new ones. We're interested in how people are actually using new media and multimodality in the changing role of images in people's activities and interactions. Many theories of technological change try to explain why only some technologies successfully enter into our sociotechnical ecologies. We content that investigating the successful incorporation of these new image-making and sharing technologies will help us understand the issue of technological change more generally. BIOGRAPHY: Nancy Van House is a Professor in the School of Information (formerly SIMS, the School of Information Management and Systems) at UC Berkeley. Her research is rooted in Science and Technology Studies, Visual Studies, and New Media. Her interest is in understanding the intersection between people's practices and activities and new technology.

(Free and open to the public - and followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments - and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above). Thoughts on Social Tagging ABSTRACT: From blogging to human-response search engines to local recommendation sites to powerpoint slide sharing sites, social media is booming in popularity. One important aspect of this phenomenon, which occurs across many different types of social media, is social tagging, or "folksonomies". In social tagging, users assign short, usually atomic category names to shared resources, such as photos or web pages. The tagging method is powerful as it requires little effort on the part of the user to tag, but can lead to what some consider a disorganized mess as tags are generally not drawn from a well thought-out vocabulary system. There has as yet not been much academic work on this rapidly emerging phenomenon. In this talk I will discuss work in progress on the topic of social tagging. I plan to cover these topics: o A discussion of the relationship between faceted metadata and tags o Some research issues on social tagging for search o A discussion of some qualitative work I've done on tag clouds BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Marti Hearst is an associate professor in the School of Information at UC Berkeley, with an affiliate appointment in the Computer Science Division. Her primary research interests are user interfaces and visualization for search engines, computational linguistics, and empirical analysis of social media.

Monday April 30 7:30 pm A rare and historic opportunity to see the famous British author and historian Sir Alistair Horne who has caught the world’s attention with his powerful insights into US problems in Iraq by comparing them to the French colonial war in Algeria. Organized by LitMinds At The Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in North Berkeley (at the corner of Cedar and Arch Streets) Admission: $5 at the door; no one turned away for lack of funds. for telephone information contact The Hillside Club at (510) 848-3227 or e-mail Lewis Klausner at lewis@litminds.org Distinguished British historian, Sir Alistair Horne’s 1977 landmark historic account of the French colonial war in Algeria, A Savage War of Peace has emerged as an underground classic among military officers in Iraq. Until recently, used copies of this book were selling on Amazon.com for $150 as policy makers, analysts, and the general public were trying to understand the complex problems of the Iraqi insurgency by studying the parallel problems faced by the French army in Algeria. In response to huge demand for the book New York Review of Books has brought out a new paperback edition that includes a new preface by Horne that discusses the parallels between the Algerian and Iraqi wars. Besides treating the military problems posed by each of these occupations, he has added a discussion of the problem of torture, the damage inflicted not only on individuals, but also the damage that Abu Ghraib inflicted upon the viability of a peaceful American occupation in Iraq. Please join us to learn first hand from a great contemporary historian why the lessons of a 50-year old French colonial war are relevant today in Iraq. Sir Alistair Horne is a fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, and lives in Oxfordshire. He was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur in 1993 and received a knighthood in 2003 for his work on French history. He is author of 18 books, including La Belle France, The Price of Glory, and Seven Ages of Paris. This event is organized by LitMinds.org and supported by Moe's Books and Radio Station KPFA.

Lloyd and Bruce's Tri Tip Trio (T.T.T.) is a new band steeped in Louisiana and New Orleans zydeco and swamp blues. But it comes with a vision and more than a decade of its members playing together. The Tri Tip Trio concept is based on Clifton and Cleveland Chenier's early zydeco/blues dance hall sounds. Lloyd Meadows' propulsive washboard, harmonica and soulful vocals along with Bruce Gordon's pumping accordion and Tyler Eng's rock-solid drumming, is all Tri Tip Trio needs to capture the raw, exciting and soulful sounds necessary for both dancers and listeners. T.T.T. plays classic zydeco, blues and New Orleans Funk as well as band originals. The group also likes to integrate cover tunes that were never originally zydeco songs into their sound.

Myra Melford

Where: Freight & Salvage

Date: 2008-03-03 20:00:00

Type:

At the keyboard, Melford recasts the blues and boogie-woogie of her Chicago hometown, folds in elements of the music of Eastern Europe and India and blends them with the rangy, percussive avant-garde stylings she cultivated in studies with Don Pullen and Henry Threadgill. This personal musical vocabulary is further enriched by a lush lyricism and organized by an architectural sense of composition that she derived from classical training. Described by Down Beat magazine as a "sonic innovator [whose reputation] has been built on electronics, trips to the fringes of electric jazz, rock 'n' roll, danceable beats and snappy writing," composer and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has led a number of experimental/improv jazz groups including the President, Pigpen, Zony Mash, and Ponga, and has also released work as a solo artist. This jazz group features Ben Perowsky, Tim Luntzel and Jim Campilongo.

foolsFURY Theater premieres “Monster in the Dark” Written by Doug Dorst; Directed by Ben Yalom Thursdays – Saturdays, Feb. 7 – 9 and 14 – 16 @ 8pm Sundays, Feb. 3, 10, 17 @ 5pm Ashby Stage 1901 Ashby Ave, Berkeley TICKETS: $15 - $30 general admission, sliding scale $12 students/seniors and TBA members Thursdays are Pay-what-you-can BOX OFFICE: (800) 838-3006 and brownpapertickets.com INFORMATION: http://www.foolsfury.org/ foolsFURY Theater Company launches their 10th Anniversary season following a stellar 2007 season distinguished with critical and popular recognition. foolsFURY was awarded the prestigious 2007 San Francisco Bay Guardian GOLDIE Award for 'Best Discovery in Theater'. The company's tour to New York's P.S. 122 was met with critical acclaim. And foolsFURY's sensational "The Turn of the Screw" was recognized as "the Best of the SF Fringe." "Monster in the Dark" tells the horrifying and darkly humorous tale about an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flood that threatens a peculiar and bizarrely familiar society. It is a world ruled by 'the Structure,' a shadowy government that monitors its citizens from beneath black umbrellas and within hidden towers. It is a place where business literally consumes you, Faith and Anxiety are preached daily on street corners, and people jump from the sky with the same frequency as rain. Life and society are threatened by a watery natural disaster, and the people of "Monster in the Dark" are challenged to redefine themselves and others; who can be trusted, who is necessary, and what is the greatest resource needed to survive. "Monster in the Dark" is the culmination of a two-year theatrical exploration in foolsFURY's style of "sheer kinetic energy and rigorous physical vocabulary" (SF Bay Guardian). Created by foolsFURY company members under the direction of Ben Yalom and in collaboration with novelist/playwright Doug Dorst, this production, like the best of foolsFURY’s work, is both hilarious and deeply disturbing.

Elders Guild meeting

Join us for the beginning of a journey of self-discovery as we pioneer new territory, piloting a project to lead in aging... in community, and beyond. This is a new program developed by Barry Barkan of the Live Oak Institute. [which pioneered reforming Nursing Homes] If you want to publicize other events, please bring flyers. Light refreshments will be served. Donations are welcome. Are You Ready to Make the Transition From Baby Boomer to Elder Boomer? Have you and your contemporaries been thinking about your role as an elder and the way we will age together, support one another and help rescue the future? Everyone is welcome, and people who came to either of the first two meetings are especially encouraged to bring a friend. What is the purpose of the Elders Guild? Given the mixed blessing of a long life, we will spend more time as elders than we have as children, as students or as builders of family and career. At a time when many of us are pondering what happens next, the Elders Guild is creating a bold new vision for the second half of our lives that combines community, activism and deep life-long learning in one organization. Our goal is for each of us to prepare for connection, potency and a meaningful role at a stage of life when we have been conditioned to expect only diminished strength, capacity and escalating loss. The Elders Guild Vision and Mission Our Vision ....is a world in which powerful and conscious elders join together in common purpose to bring healing, joy and connection to our lives, our families, our communities and our world. Our Mission ....is to create the communities where we re-imagine our old age, look after one another and embody the wisdom that will enable us to help heal the future. The Elders Guild seeks to unleash the virtually unprecedented resource of a planetary network of conscious and responsible elders by focusing on organizing ourselves in three crucial areas of our individual and collective development: Community, Wisdom, and Championing the Future. Who should come Have you and your contemporaries been thinking about your role as an elder and the way we will age together, support one another and help rescue the future? Engage Self-Awareness tools to lead the Aging Process. All ages welcome. Why I went to the first meeting in the new Elder Guild series in November and was very impressed with the people and the tools, plus the process. It has a number of parallels to the Senior Cohousing "Study Group" curriculum and Beacon Hill Village model.

Challenges Facing Collaborative Free Software Projects

Where: Berkeley iSchool Room 202

Date: 2008-02-26 12:00:00

Type:

I am interested in collaborative forms of creativity enabled or enhanced through computer networks and the ways in which law or other factors facilitate or frustrate creative innovation. A primary example of collaborative creativity that interests me is open source and free software development. Such collaborative software projects have been recognized for their promise, but increasingly face legal difficulties that threaten their long-term viability and success. In this talk I examine several of these problems posed within the realms of patent, copyright, and trademark law. Recognition of and awareness of these problems is the first step towards crafting practical solutions that could enable these collaborative creators to realize the promise they represent.

California needs new, responsive demand-side energy technologies, to ensure that periods of tight electricity supply on the grid don't turn into power outages. Led by Berkeley Lab’s Mary Ann Piette, the California Energy Commission (through its Public Interest Energy Research Program) has established a Demand Response Research Center that addresses two motivations for adopting demand responsiveness: reducing average electricity prices, and preventing future electricity crises. The research seeks to understand factors that influence "what works" in Demand Response. Piette’s team is investigating the two types of demand response – load response and price response – that may influence and reduce the use of peak electric power through automated controls, peak pricing, advanced communications, and other strategies. Would you be willing to consider one or some of these? Please join us to learn more about these developments.

by George Bernard Shaw directed by Susannah Martin ONE MOTHER – ONE DAUGHTER – ONE SECRET It took George Bernard Shaw eight years to get this brilliant, controversial play produced. In his famous "apology" for the script Shaw describes the "hysterical tumult of protest, of moral panic, of involuntary and frantic confession of sin" that ensued. A work that argues the true outrage is to live one life but believe in another. It's as ripe for our time as his.

Felonious is 100 percent live hip hop -- no turntables or DAT players allowed. In a hip hop scene almost entirely focused on the DJ, this makes for a lot of raised eyebrows. Rapper Dan Wolf (aka MC Euripides) explains: "We chose the name Felonious because by not having a DJ, we're breaking a hip hop law."

FRI JUNE 6TH FISHBONE THE UPTONES SUN HOUSE (ska, funk, soul, rock) SHATTUCK DOWN LOW 2284 Shattuck Ave Berkeley, CA $17adv // $20 at door buy tickets at ticketweb.com or at club FISHBONE Fishbone lives up to their legend as THE group to bridge the gap between the funk of George Clinton and the blare of Rush; a hybrid fusion where Led Zeppelin and Sly Stone dance to a frenetic ska beat that fuels the alternative thrust of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes Addiction and the cast of Lollapalooza. From their childhood together in the hardcore South Central Los Angeles wasteland to years of forced school-bused integration, Fishbones influences were kaleidoscopic and never-ending. The band was formed in 1979 in the ghettos of South Central Los Angeles. The group came from the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Janes Addiction. Fishbone first gained attention with their unique live concerts, earning a reputation as one of the most original bands in the alternative genre. Their unique stew of different styles, mixed with hectic energy and pounding rhythms, were a huge influence on the funk/rock/metal/rap genre that would become popular in the 1990s. Live audiences around the world have been surrendering to the bands stage flash and magical rhythms with uninterrupted regularity. Such passionate devotion is not lost on Fishbone, who refer to their friends on the road as The Familyhood. www.fishbone.net
