TOPIC: Friendsters at Work: Displaying Social Media Streams in the Workplace Although there is a growing appreciation for the value of friendships in work settings, relatively little attention has been devoted to how sharing through social media services can help foster stronger relationships in the workplace. At Nokia Research Center Palo Alto, they are embarking on an investigation into the use of a new generation of proactive displays - large computer displays that can sense and respond in contextually appropriate ways to the people nearby. Our new Context, Content and Community Collage proactive display application is running on 8 LCD touchcomputers recently deployed throughout our lab. Nearby people are sensed via Bluetooth phones, and the response is an incrementally generated ambient collage of photos from Flickr profiles they have chosen to share. The presentation will highlight the motivations, goals, design and early deployment experiences with the proactive display application. Joe McCarthy is a Principal Instigator at Nokia Research Center Palo Alto. $15 non SDForum members; no charge for members; registration not required.

The Chinese New Year Treasure Hunt is a unique urban sleuthing adventure played on the streets of Chinatown, North Beach, and Telegraph Hill on the night of the annual Chinese New Year Parade. Treasure hunting teams have four hours to solve sixteen clues leading them to obscure landmarks, forgotten architectural delights and vestiges of San Francisco's colorful past. Players can come with a team already organized, or can join like-minded hunters at the event; it's a great way to make new friends.Sleuths in action, dressed properly for the occasion Familiarity with San Francisco geography or history is useful, but is not required. The clues, or puzzles, are designed to test various skills: map reading; knowledge of popular culture, current events, science or literature; crossword puzzle solving; cracking simples codes, etc. Everyone on a team gets to contribute, and must collaboratively agree on what they think is the correct solution to each clue.

Every month it’s a new YEAR. When was the last time you went out for a cocktail or to see live music and felt like you belonged? Year is a new nightlife brand premiering in San Francisco once a month on Friday night. At Year we will celebrate 50 years of Rock and Roll Hits (1956-2006) ONE year at a time. Year is: 1. The Cocktail of The Year mixed just like it was back in the day. 2. The Top 100 Hits of The Year mixed live by d.j. Dennis “The Menace” 3. The Environment of the Year. Conversation starting trivia throughout the night you might have forgotten (or never knew!) 4. The Cover Songs From The Year Played Live At Midnight. What band or musician will play them? While that’s a well-kept secret, you can be sure it will be a “once in a lifetime” performance! 5. The “Limited Edition, Signed By The Artist” Year Poster. Collect these silk screened artworks while you can. Once they are sold out, they won’t be back. Admission to the Premiere of Year is $20. Tickets are available in advance on Ticketweb with a link from our website: www.yearsf.com The first 50 people at the door get the Limited Edition Signed By The Artist Poster, so get to the Hotel Utah early.

The Hotel Utah Open Mic with host JJ Schultz http://theutah.org The Hotel Utah open mic is the epicenter of San Francisco's singer-songwriter community. Its stage attracts performers at all stages of their careers: from seasoned veterans to first-timers. It attracts music fans who know a good thing when they see it. The musicians who come regularly don't come just to get a little "stage time" - they come because of the community that calls Monday at The Utah home - and the musicians that come in for the first time eventually start to come regularly... So come on down this monday, have a beer, bring your guitar if that's your thing, and sit back and enjoy. This week's feature performer - JEANNE FOSS http://www.jeannetunes.com Jeanne /zh䨮/ n. [Fr. from Jeanne D'Arc.] woman, daughter, sister, lover, fellow traveler, soup slurper, ghee spreader, occasional nose-picker, recovering hard-wired pleaser, city street and dirt path walker, reluctant self-identifier, once-upon a time painter, present day singer-song writer, maybe tomorrow's world champion wrestler, or maybe yet another home baker?. With naked sincerity, compassion, and at times cunning humor, Jeanne's songs depict a personal, yet universal view of life -- not always sweet, not always smooth, not always beautiful, but somehow always just right. She currently lives in San Francisco, California and is working on her first album, The Pleasers, which consists of songs that invite the soul to rise up from behind its usual hiding places of human conditioning, social masks, old habits, fears and other issues so common and so dear.
