OLD STATE HOUSE COMES TO LIFEWITH NEW SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Andrus Madsen to Perform English Harpsichord Musicat the Old State House on July 26 Who: The Bostonian Society, in partnership with Newton Baroque, presents the Old State House Summer Concert Series 2007. What: Harpsichordist Andrus Madsen will perform music by Purcell, Croft, and Draghi, some of which may well have been played in the Old State House during the early years of the 18th century. After the Glorious Revolution restored the British monarchy, musical culture in London flourished, and not only in domestic circles—some of the earliest known public concerts also were taking place at this time. The harpsichord was at the very center of this thriving scene, both as a solo instrument and as the foundation for ensembles large and small. When: Thursday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. Where: The Old State House, 260 Washington Street (Corner of State and Congress Streets) in Downtown Boston Why: This summer, the Old State House will come to life with live performances of 18th century music. This series of three concerts, presented by The Bostonian Society in partnership with Newton Baroque, will offer music that was popular in Boston and may have been played in the Old State House during the colonial period. Newton Baroque director Andrus Madsen will provide commentary throughout the concerts to place the music in historical context. Admission: Free with admission to the Old State House For more information, please call 617-720-1713 x27 or visit www.bostonhistory.org.

"SMFA Traveling Scholars," on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, February 2–March 2, presents current work by the 2006 recipients of the prestigious Traveling Scholarships awarded annually by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA). The six prize-winning artists are Bill Durgin, Mathew Clay Freeman, Leslie Hall, Will Pappenheimer, Laurel Sparks, and Elizabeth H. Wallace. This year’s exhibition includes a variety of media—such as photography, installation, video, and painting—and features artists engaged in highly individual and clearly defined discourses. Since 1899, the SMFA has awarded Traveling Scholarships—travel grants that annually total $80,000 to $100,000—to select Museum School alumni and Fifth Year program students. As the independent juries that award Traveling Scholarships are guided exclusively by the quality of each artist’s submitted work, the resulting exhibition features a variety of traditional and experimental media that reflects the SMFA’s mission to nurture individual development. The cost for this 18+ exhibition is $17 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors. Related Events: Artists’ Talk Wednesday, February 13, 6 pm Will Pappenheimer and Laurel Sparks discuss their work in the exhibition. Artists’ Talk Thursday, February 28, 11 am Bill Durgin, Mathew Clay Freeman, and Elizabeth H. Wallace discuss their work in the exhibition.

Popa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz, takes blues to the cutting edge, where it highfives its contemporary cousins rock, rap, and hip hop, wiith his razor sharp, biting guitar, vocals from the gut, and top-notch skill as a songwriter. Popa Chubby artfully combines the rootsiness of blues with the more modern urban elements of today's popular music. His blues are gritty, urban and always utterly contemporary.

The Kills consist of VV and Hotel. These two have been making music since 2002 and doing a lot of home recordings where they live in the UK. With a serious knack for doing great raw recordings, narcotic and saccharine - the drums alone will pull you in. The strong female presence evokes comparison to Chrissie Hynde and Patti Smith, while the male vocals charm those that know the sounds of Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground.
