Monday April 30 7:30 pm A rare and historic opportunity to see the famous British author and historian Sir Alistair Horne who has caught the world’s attention with his powerful insights into US problems in Iraq by comparing them to the French colonial war in Algeria. Organized by LitMinds At The Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in North Berkeley (at the corner of Cedar and Arch Streets) Admission: $5 at the door; no one turned away for lack of funds. for telephone information contact The Hillside Club at (510) 848-3227 or e-mail Lewis Klausner at lewis@litminds.org Distinguished British historian, Sir Alistair Horne’s 1977 landmark historic account of the French colonial war in Algeria, A Savage War of Peace has emerged as an underground classic among military officers in Iraq. Until recently, used copies of this book were selling on Amazon.com for $150 as policy makers, analysts, and the general public were trying to understand the complex problems of the Iraqi insurgency by studying the parallel problems faced by the French army in Algeria. In response to huge demand for the book New York Review of Books has brought out a new paperback edition that includes a new preface by Horne that discusses the parallels between the Algerian and Iraqi wars. Besides treating the military problems posed by each of these occupations, he has added a discussion of the problem of torture, the damage inflicted not only on individuals, but also the damage that Abu Ghraib inflicted upon the viability of a peaceful American occupation in Iraq. Please join us to learn first hand from a great contemporary historian why the lessons of a 50-year old French colonial war are relevant today in Iraq. Sir Alistair Horne is a fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, and lives in Oxfordshire. He was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur in 1993 and received a knighthood in 2003 for his work on French history. He is author of 18 books, including La Belle France, The Price of Glory, and Seven Ages of Paris. This event is organized by LitMinds.org and supported by Moe's Books and Radio Station KPFA.

Christopher Hitchens is one of the most compelling and controversial voices of modern journalism. A staunch supporter of intellect over opinions and principles over politics, Hitchens writes with scope and great flair. "Only an open conflict of ideas and principles can produce any clarity, " he observed in Letters to a Young Contrarian. Hitchens is a master of argument, dialectical confrontation, and general troublemaking. As the longtime Washington editor for Harper's magazine, contributing editor to Vanity Fair, and critic-at-large for several publications in Great Britain, including the New Left Review, Hitchens contributes unpredictable and formidable analysis to international debates. His most recent book, God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, makes the case for religion as a malignant force. Hitchens is also the author of Thomas Jefferson, Why Orwell Matters, and The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice. In conversation with Alan Jones, Dean of Grace Cathedral

Books Inc. in the Castro in association with the SF LGBT Center is pleased to announce our next Book Group selection: We Disappear by Scott Heim. In a Kansas field, a teenage boy is found murdered, an event that sparks a dark obsession in a hard-luck woman named Donna. Recently widowed and battling cancer, she persuades her son, Scott, to help her discover more about “disappeared” people, hoping to uncover clues about her own troubled past. Fighting demons of his own, including drug addiction, Scott is barely holding on, but the chance to help is mother offers a taste of salvation. But Donna’s compulsions soon take a darker turn, and Scott finds a strange boy named Otis handcuffed in a secret basement room. Who, Scott wonders, is Otis? And how is he linked to Donna’s hazy memories of her own childhood disappearance? As his mother’s health deteriorates, Scott resolves to answer these questions, discovering Otis’s unsettling connection to other missing teens- and, ultimately, to Scott himself. * * * Our next Book Group meeting is Wednesday, April 16th at 7 PM at the Three Dollar Bill Cafe at the LGBT Center, 1800 Market St. (@ Octavia). As always, I'd like everyone to come with any observations they may have as well as at least one question to pose to the group. Also, please come equipped with any title suggestions for our next joint venture. Hope to see you there. The Center/Books Inc. Book Group is free and open to everyone. We encourage inclusiveness and promote diversity. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of every month. * * * Books Inc. is a locally owned and operated independent bookseller with 10 locations in California. Books Inc.’s origin dates back to the Gold Rush Days of 1851 when Anton Roman struck it rich in Shasta City, California and set himself up in business selling books. That small bookstore was moved, bought, sold, burned, rebuilt, renamed and became Books Inc., as we know it today, in 1946. Today, with 10 Stores and 200 employees, Books Inc. serves as a shining example that independent bookselling can survive and prosper, even if we must dance among the elephants.
