Penguin Days involve community exploration of open source software for nonprofits and helps socially-minded technologists find ways to support public interest organizations. The gathering serves to demystify open source software as an agent for social change. Open source software can be freely shared, distributed, and modified so that organizations can adapt software programs to suit their specific needs. Unique sessions feature breakout discussions and entertaining "speedgeeking" (modeled after speed-dating) to bring programmers and users together in fast-paced information exchanges. Organizers say there is a growing group of programmers who are interested in making their skills and technical knowledge available for social impact. Cost: * $150.00 - Participants from organizations with budgets over $500,000. * $90.00 - Individuals and participants from organizations with budgets under $500,000. * Scholarships and sliding scale slots are available. Please don't let cost be a barrier to your participation.

In the spring of 2005, the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) at The University of Texas at Austin hosted the first IUPLR Biennial Conference. Due to the success of the 2005 event, CMAS will host the second IUPLR Biennial Conference on April 12-14, 2007 in Austin, Texas. SIGLO XXI: Economies of Class, Economies of Culture—is broadly intended to suggest that we now live in the twenty-first century when the expanding Latino communities in the United States are faced with class and cultural configurations and issues that are both challenges but also opportunities for the fruitful development of these peoples. We envision a conference that explores both traditional and emergent economies of culture and class, analyses preferably based on substantial empirical, textual or archival data. Presentations at the conference will focus on issues of health, language use, politics, immigration, literature and the arts, history, and popular culture, among others.

Meeting Topic: Coding Fundamentals for Non-Programmers. The idea behind the topic is not to teach a programming language, but to provide a foundation for people who haven't programmed, or haven't had a formal education in programming. Questions that may fit into the presentation are: - What are good and bad practices? - What are some of the basic pitfalls that a new programmer should avoid? - What are the phases that a good programmer follows for a project? If you are interested in this great opportunity to share your experience with your peers by presenting on this topic, please drop Alex an e-mail in the next couple of days.
