Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental band from Chicago. It would be tough to imagine that a band would be able to develop its own unique presence and innovation with such solid groundwork in the instrumental genre. However, Russian Circles does bring something new to the table. Their songs feel incredibly narrative and linear. There is no angular flash or mathematical flair. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea. They are gargantuan in scope. They flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost. Variety is no gimmick and they are a band that does not just vacillate within an achieved sonic identity.

Dax Riggs (formerly Deadboy & the Elephantmen): " * Tricky fucker, that Dax Riggs. First he comes out of hibernation in late 2005, releases the first new Deadboy and the Elephantmen album in three years with a female drummer in tow, tours the shit out of it, disappears again, then nixes the Deadboy name to release this follow-up to We Are Night Sky under his own (ghoulish) moniker. Working with Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Zwan, Early Man, El-P) has definitely helped focus Riggs’ sound—where Night Sky bristled and buzzed with manic energy uncontained, We Sing of Only Blood or Love is certainly sleeker-sounding. As ever, though, it’s Riggs’ unmistakable world-weary wail packed with old blues imagery (rivers, death, slowly rolling heartache), tweaked by his own special surrealism (exploding moons, demons tied to chairs) that make these bubbling swamp serenades sound so odd and enjoyable. - Daniel Lukes, Decibel Magazine" Man In Gray: "If Bikini Kill and Sonic Youth had procreated, the frantic infant might sound like this female-fronted, Brooklyn-bred noisy quintet. It's taken the band nearly five years to transform their sound into the edgy, indie-punk showcase on their debut full-length, I Can't Sleep Unless I Hear You Breathing. The end result is a blend of punchy guitar-pop lines and dissonant, wailing harmonies, all pitted against the raw, energetic vocals of singer Tina DaCosta. With each track almost exploding into the next ("Sleeping" to "Stranded") and the occasional reprieve ("Crawl"), Man in Gray attempts to modernize the once-cherished, now wheezing art-punk vibe. - CMJ New Music Report" (ps. this is Bryan from Man in Gray's birthday party. there will be cupcakes and such)

TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Monday, February 25th The Lolita Bar 226 Broome St. (corner of Allen St.) 8:00pm - FREE HOST: Eric Kirchberger WITH: Tom Shillue starred in his own "Comedy Central Presents: Tom Shillue" 1/2-hour special, and just released his own album, "Overconfident!" Marina Franklin has been seen on “Chapelle’s Show”, NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” “Show Time at The Apollo,” Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend,” Dutch TV's "The Comedy Factory" and the BBC’s “The World Stands Up,” and at the Montreal Comedy Festival and the Bonnaroo Music Festival Liam McEneaney from VH1's "Best Week Ever" and Comedy Central's "Premium Blend" Mike Dobbins is an awesome, insane force of comedy nature and special guest: Karin Fagerlund is a news anchor for TV-4 in Uppsala, making her stand-up debut! WHAT THE PRESS HAS SAID ABOUT "TELL YOUR FRIENDS!" * Time Out New York called it a "DON'T MISS" several times, and said: "With a slew of talented stand-ups . . . and folk-rock duo 'A Brief View of the Hudson,' Liam McEneaney's new show—and 'workout comedy room'—is sure to please." * The NY Daily News made it a Monday pick of the day. * AM New York put it in their "Best Bets" section. * "Editor's Pick!" - clubfreetime.com * The Onion says, "Though it's pegged as a 'workout room' for comics to test their new(ish) material, Liam McEneaney's weekly show Tell Your Friends flexes enough comedic muscle to pull its weight alongside more established downtown shows. Demetri Martin, Slovin & Allen, and Late Night With Conan O'Brien writer Brian Kiley are among the stand-ups who have squeezed into Lolita's narrow space since the show's debut this summer, alongside the surprisingly tolerable resident folk duo A Brief View of the Hudson." * "It's been a while since we wrote about Tell Your Friends but this weekly comedy series deserves a nod. Every Monday they belt out top notch comedy at rock bottom prices with performers who have appeared on Comedy Central, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, and more." - FreeNYC.net * "'Tell Your Friends!' This, the well-earned title of Lolita Bar's upcoming comedy show, rings true for anyone looking for a good time and great comedy at no charge. (The comedians') collective resume spans Comedy Central, including "The Daily Show," "Premium Blend" and "Live at Gotham." They are simply some of the best club comedians in America today." - The Times Herald-Record (Upstate NY) ABOUT OUR HOUSE BAND A Brief View of the Hudson is a folk-rock duo that blows away audiences at every show they play. Here's what the press has said: * "BEST FOLK DUO" "It's rare that we like a band from the first chord. Yet the first time we saw folk duo A Brief View of the Hudson play at the Bowery Poetry Club we were hooked. "Ann Enzminger and Nicholas Nace incorporate many of the best characteristics of both country music and classic rock without sounding derivative...Enzminger is a tiny woman, a hair taller than five feet, but with an opera-trained voice as big and sweet as a bowling ball–size Hershey Kiss. Nace's twangy talk-singing adds a quirky and ear-catching roughness; we crave the combination time and again." - The NY Press * "It is not often that a band sounds like nothing you've ever heard & still sounds good. That's what you get from A Brief View of the Hudson." - The NY Sun * "A Brief View of the Hudson features Ann Enzminger's arrestingly powerful vocals, which are well tuned to the duo's graceful songs of indie-folk heartbreak." -Time Out NY

Hosts, Doug Ridloff and Jason Norman are breaking ground for the Deaf community by blending skits, character sketches, storytelling, and guest stars in their encore production of ASL in the Raw at Comix March 20th at 8:00 PM. Doug Ridloff is a nice Jewish boy gone blue. Born and raised in Queens, Doug’s early dirty encounters involved only the soil and grass in his backyard. After earning a B.A. in Physical Education and a M.A. in Special Education, he went out and saw the world and some more dirt-Central America, Europe, and Asia. Doug saw that there was a universal sense of humor: body language and gestures about sex. He began a new collection of “blue” jokes and stories to shake up the Deaf community. Jason Norman is a D.C. native and a NYC convert, bringing you the raw and naughty flavors of both worlds. For over three years now, Jason has hosted the monthly ASL Poetry and Storytelling at the Bowery Poetry Club. For far too long, American Sign Language on the stage has been “clean and safe.” Inspired by classic comedians back in the day like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Andrew Dice Clay, Jason realized it was time to penetrate the boundaries of ASL and get down and dirty. This is a show that must be seen! Thursday, March 20th @ 8:00 PM Comix 353 West 14th Street New York, NY 10014 Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day-of-show plus two item minimum in the showroom. Mortified– The Most Painfully Honest Show Around!

Where: Comix

Date: 2008-04-07 20:00:00

Ripped from the pages of real life, Mortified is a comic excavation of adolescent artifacts (journals, letters, poems, lyrics, home movies, stories and more) as shared by their original authors before total strangers. Watch it live on the Comix stage on April 7th. Co-produced in New York by Brandy Barber & Anne Altman, Mortified has been hailed as a "cultural phenomenon" by Newsweek and celebrated by the likes of This American Life, The Today Show, The Onion AV Club, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, Jane, Daily Candy and more. The project collects childhood creations and uses them to reveal uniquely autobiographical tales. There are a million stories buried in the pages of ordinary people's lives. Their mission is to simply help find them. Where can you hear grown men and women confront their past with firsthand tales of their... first kiss, first puff, worst prom, fights with mom, life at bible camp, worst hand job, best mall job, and everything in between? Only at Mortified and only at Comix! Cd release for "The Family Album" by Lucibel Crater

Where: Joe's Pub

Date: 2008-05-15 19:00:00

Type:

Lucibel Crater is proud to present “The Family Album,” produced by Lucibel, mixed by Bryce Goggin and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. If music can trigger long-abandoned muscle memories, here are 10 short films from American life. Love, lust, struggle, loneliness, paranoia fill the landscape in the portraits of “The Family Album.” The layers of sound are both familiar and unsettling, created by over 20 hours of live, open improvisation and then whittled down to the essence of each player’s individual sound. Lou Reed joins “At a Threadbare Funeral,” adding a eulogy full of fire and brimstone. It’s easy to open “The Family Album,” and each time will reveal another image. Closing it might be tough. “It's not easy to sound this fresh without ever sounding contrived, but Lucibel Crater pulls it off effortlessly. The Family Album enacts family values the way they ought to be -- emotionally charged, continually surprising, inspiring in their originality and ambition, provocative and fun, noisy and meaningful. And entirely satisfying.” - Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone "Lucibel Crater is a breath of fresh air. Compelling melodies, with evocative hybrid organic/electro sounds and sterling performances (seldom heard in a Techno wasteland)” -Tony Visconti, Producer, David Bowie, Angelique Kidjo
