Murder by Death

Where: Bowery Ballroom

Date: 2008-04-04 20:00:00

Type:

Indiana's Murder by Death layers the vocal sounds of an old saloon with the haunting strings of an Hungarian folk dance and the hard driving rhythms of pure rock n' roll, producing what Stuff magazine has called "lush, orchestrated songs," somehow simultaneously reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Radiohead. Equal parts appalachian ghost songs, civil-war-era gospel rave ups, and dilapidated punk vision, o'death's possessed hysteria brings new life to the exhausted modern country sound. Death-centric, yet uplifting, this band is invoking dead music in a modern context.

Teenage Jesus & The Jerks

Where: Knitting Factory

Date: 2008-06-13 20:00:00

Type:

Two shows, separate admission: 8pm and 11pm $25 To commemorate the publishing of NO WAVE: Post Punk, Underground, New York, 1976-1980 edited by Thurston Moore and Byron Coley and published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., the Knitting Factory NYC is proud to present the one time only return of the most legendary of No Wave pioneers TEENAGE JESUS & THE JERKS. Started by Lydia Lunch in 1976 in a NYC landscape at its peak of rot and desecration TEENAGE JESUS THE JERKS spared no one. A complete disinterest in favorable audience response and a vicious leer towards any rock n' roll burnout critique distinguished TEENAGE JESUS & THE JERKS not only from the burgeoning punk fodder of the CBGB/Max's axis but of their contemporaries in the No Wave scene as well. Led by notorious teenage downtown death-kitten Lydia Lunch the band had within its fold for its barely three year existence saxophonist James Chance who departed early on to form The Contortions. Other members included bass player Reck who returned to Japan to continue with the infamous Friction, bass player Gordon Stevenson who died, drummer Bradley Field who died, and bass player Jim Sclavunos who played with many No Wave acts of the time and went on to play with Sonic Youth in the early 80s and, for the last decade or so, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. The band recorded the most incendiary documents of the era on the NYC label Lust/Unlust and French label ZE. Atavistic Records is issuing a complete TEENAGE JESUS & THE JERKS compilation in June 2008. The band will feature Lydia, James Sclavunos on drum and a lost member of TJ&TJ on bass. Also on the bill will be a supporting act from the ashes of the original NYC No Wave nightmare. Don't be late, it will be over before you know it.
