Stephen Sondheim & Frank Rich March 11, 2008 Portland Arts & Lectures Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., box office opens at 6:00 p.m. Lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim burst onto the Broadway scene in 1957 writing the lyrics for West Side Story. He then penned both lyrics and music for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), which won a Tony for best musical. In such hits as Company (1970) and A Little Night Music (1973), Sondheim developed his signature style, rooted in the music of such classical masters as Bach. Recent works include Assassins (1990), a controversial work examining men who killed American presidents, and Bounce (2003). Sondheim is one of the only people to have won a Tony, a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award and a Grammy. He also has a periodical devoted to his work, The Sondheim Review. Before becoming a popular op-ed columnist for The New York Times, Frank Rich was the paper’s chief theater critic. He is the author of Ghost Light (2000), a memoir of his childhood love for Broadway theater. Underwritten by Hoffman Construction Company.
