COMIX WELCOMES EMO PHILIPS! NEW YORK, NY – Emo Philips of Late Night With David Letterman and his own one- hour HBO special headlines four shows at Comix on January 18th and 19th. Philips started his career in the comedy clubs of Chicago. His big break came in 1984 with an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. Shortly after came the award-winning comedy album E=MO Squared, a half-hour Cinemax Comedy Experiment, and his HBO one hour special, Emo Philips Live at the Hasty Pudding Theatre. Around this same time Philips started making annual trips to the UK and became just as big a star there by appearing on the Bob Monkhouse Show, Friday Live, and Saturday Live. He went on to be the hit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which led to a run at a West End theater, a UK tour, a Channel Four Special, and TV “adverts” for Sony. Jay Leno has called Philips “the best joke writer in America.” In a comedy survey commissioned by GQ Magazine, three of Philips’ jokes were judged, by a panel of his peers, to be among the best seventy-five of all time -- and one of those three was recently voted, in a British poll, to be the funniest joke about religion ever. In the world of animated television, Philips voiced Shannon the Bully on Home Movies, and has appeared as himself on Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Abigail Washburn

Abigail Washburn never set out to be a songwriter or a recording artist. So when she found herself on stage in a smoke filled Beijing club playing her banjo and singing old time Appalachian mountain music in Chinese to a packed house, she was as surprised as anyone. On her return to the States, Washburn began to explore American culture, a journey that led her back to her native country's traditional roots. When she heard Doc Watson playing 'Shady Grove' on the banjo, something clicked and the connection that eventually led to 'Song of the Traveling Daughter' was made. Musically, the album is one of the most bare bones debuts in recent memory.

Born Of Osiris BORN OF OSIRIS is said to be "an epic mix of intricate and memorable melodies with challenging time signatures that still hold an infectious groove, all while maintaining sheer, tasteful brutality." See You Next Tuesday Playing what they refer to as “Brutal grind for brutal dudes” See You Next Tuesday are four unassuming guys from suburban Michigan. Modesty aside, aficionados of brutal music will also note the band’s use of innovation and experimentation to expand the grind genre past blast beats and cookie monster growls. Main songwriter Drew Slavik (guitar) who never repeats chords in the band’s songs is obsessed with bringing back the 80’s shred style. Commenting on this he says “I only play vintage 80’s Kramers and made it my mission to bring back the whammy bar!” Similarly driven vocalist, Fox deliver screams ranging from high screeches to low bellows in a discernible delivery. Completing the arsenal, rhythm section of Andy Dalton (drums) and Travis Martin (bass) populate the bottom end with enough propulsion to launch an A-Bomb. Beneath the Massacre Coming from a rich, albeit relatively modern heritage of brutal Canadian death metal, BENEATH THE MASSACRE is perhaps the band most apt to take the title for the heaviest and most technical band from its northern forefathers. Mixing voracious, grinding double bass alongside stop-start guitar work and unhallowed death metal growls with a helpful does of destructive breakdowns and unparalleled technicality, the handful of new tracks that make up BENEATH THE MASSACRE’s debut full-length are a welcome addition to the heavy metal world.

DOORS 7:00 PM // ADV $10// DOS $12 Decades after their brief yet influential career first ground to a sudden and mysterious halt, the Silver Apples remain one of pop music's true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms and electronically-generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. The Silver Apples formed in New York in 1967 and comprised percussionist Danny Taylor and lead vocalist Simeon, a bizarre figure who played an instrument also dubbed the Simeon, which (according to notes on the duo's self-titled 1968 debut LP) consisted of "nine audio oscillators and eighty-six manual manual controls...The lead and rhythm oscillators are played with the hands, elbows and knees and the bass oscillators are played with the feet." Although the utterly uncommercial record ¡½ an ingenious cacophony of beeps, buzzes and beats ¡½ sold poorly, the Silver Apples resurfaced a year later with their sophomore effort, Contact, another far-flung outing which fared no better than its predecessor. After the record's release, the duo seemingly vanished into thin air, perhaps returning to the alien world from whence they purportedly came; however, in 1996 the Silver Apples mysteriously resurfaced, as Simeon and new partner Xian Hawkins released the single "Fractal Flow." American and European tours followed, and a year later a new LP, Beacon, was released to wide acclaim. The follow-up Decatur appeared in 1998, and was soon joined by A Lake of Teardrops (a collaboration with avowed fans Spectrum) as well as The Garden, the long-unreleased third and final effort from the original Simeon/Taylor partnership. However, on November 1, 1998, the Silver Apples' van crashed while returning from a New York gig; the accident left Simeon with a broken neck and spinal injuries, casting his continued musical career in grave doubt. Danny Taylor passed away recently (March 10 2005) of a heart attack in Kingston, New York at the age of 56.
