While rooted in the jazz tradition, Hello Society incorporates an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from hip-hop to post-rock. Never settling into a static mold, this DC based group thrives on live audience interaction. Snarky Puppy was formed in 2004 by bassist and primary composer Michael League. Snarky Puppy was signed by SiTMoM Records in fall of 2005 and subsequently recorded and released their first studio record, "The Only Constant," in winter of 2006. The CD has met critical acclaim from the industry's top musicians and representatives and has created a serious buzz among musicians and non-musicians alike. The group draws upon a variety of musical traditions compositionally, but is heavier on more modern styles, especially jazz, funk, fusion and drum n' bass.

In this unflinching, timely, wide-ranging collection of essays, William Jelani Cobb lays bare the black experience of the past decade using cinema, music, literature, politics and pop culture. From the "too smart" irony of Dave Chappelle to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; from the gift and curse of "black success" in the post civil rights era to the failure of history to act as a guide for the present, this collection is a chronicle of where we have been and a signpost for where we need to go next. Cobb is an assistant professor of history at Spelman College, a contributing writer to Essence magazine and author of To The Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic.
