Craig Gass

Where: Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase

Date: 2007-09-08 20:00:00

Type:

It’s yet another comedy debut here at the Comedy Showcase!! Gass has been "performing stand-up comedy since 1993 when he decided to get revenge on a group of comedians who had ridiculed him for attempting to perform at an open mic." He acquired his peculiar talent of imitating characters and actors by learning to speak as a child from watching TV. Both his parents and sister are completely deaf. With his family unable to serve as a model for how to speak, Gass grew up imitating the voices on TV. Gass inherited the ability to hear from his father, a man born with all his hearing but who lost it later in life. Two of his favorite comedians were Robin Williams and Impressionist Stephen James Deac. Craig performed on the same stage as Stephen in Seattle Washington. Stephen James Deac, a primarily industrial film actor from Los Angeles was the inspiration for propelling him into voice over and Television. In 2002, Gass found work on one episode of HBO's Sex and the City. He claims to have put on over 30 pounds for his role as Tom "Big Boned" in the episode: "Cover Girl". He co-starred with Alec Baldwin on NBC's Las Vegas in early 2005 where he played a comedian, "Richie Phillips", who would begin his act by stirring people's drinks with his penis. Other television highlights include a guest spot on Law & Order as "Mark Grandy", and some commercial work for AT&T and Smirnoff. In 2004, Gass played the new driver in the episode "Entertainment Weakly" of King of Queens. You’ve also seen him this summer on ABC’s reality show “Next Best Thing,” a show featuring impressionists. IT’S A DON’T MISS SHOW FOR THOSE WHO LIKE THEIR COMEDY POLITICALLY INCORRECT!! DON'T COME IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED Showtimes: 8:00 & 10:30 pm Tickets: $20 in advance, $22 at the door

Karen Rontowski

Where: Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase

Date: 2007-05-12 20:00:00

Type:

When it comes to funny, Karen is truly America's sweetheart of comedy. She has been tapped as being the next female star in the comedy world. We agree but would put it in far stronger language. Language like, “the makings of a superstar comedian” or “destined for popularity like no other female comedian in the world.” Her distinctive brand of humor has been making audiences laugh all across the country. She brings to light life's everyday problems, such as visits to the Laundromat or the trouble with having an alligator in your apartment (!?!), and all with a polished stage presence that makes you feel like you’ve known her for years. Karen has opened for such show biz legends as Bob Hope, Ray Charles and The Monkees. She is a regular on the number one radio show in the country, “The Bob and Tom Show” and can be seen on Comedy Centrals “Live at Gotham”. She just recently made her acting debut playing the lead role of Sue Burrow in the upcoming movie short, "Return To Sender" and has been featured in the book "Women's Lip" edited by Roz Warren and Moxxie Greeting Cards. You've also seen her on "Bob Hope's Young Comedians Special" as well as HBO, and other cable comedy specials. Don't miss another rising star at the Comedy Showcase! Showtimes: 8:00 & 10:30 pm Tickets: $11 in advance, $13 at the door Friday & Saturday 8pm shows are all non-smoking

It's welcome week 2007. Classes start Tuesday, and you'll probably spend Monday waiting in line to buy books, but fear not. Look at this as an opportunity to either put the final cap on your summer, or kick off a new school year by securing your place among Ann Arbor's cultural elite. If nothing else, just freak out, because this rock-avant-folk-psychedelic-noise concert is absolutely free brought to you by WCBN 88.3 FM Ann Arbor. http://www.wcbn.org/ The three hand-selected bands performing are: SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN (Boston, MA) http://www.myspace.com/sunburnedhandoftheman ODD CLOUDS (Detroit, MI) (Feat. Jaime Easter, Chris Pottinger of COTTON MUSEUM, SLITHER, Heath Moerland of SICK LLAMA, SLITHER) http://www.tastysoil.com/oddclouds/ GRAVEYARDS (Ypsilanti, MI) (feat. John Olson of WOLF EYES) http://geocities.com/americantapes/ Anyone new to the Ann Arbor music scene or looking for a primer on recent trends in experimental music should look no further than this event, just off campus, smack dab in the middle of "welcome week," which is otherwise known for bland, pandering events promising bad food, worse music, and maybe a disgustingly sweaty bus ride to a supermarket. While you're at the show, people from WCBN will be on hand to tell you everything you need to know about becoming a DJ at Ann Arbor's only truly independant radio station, 88.3 FM. That's right, consider yourself warned. This is the place to be September 2nd. Doors at 7. All Ages. No cover! DUDES, DO NOT MISS THIS!
