Join us at the Detroit Public Library’s Hubbard Branch on Saturday, May 5th for the third program in a 2007 series called Michigan Notable Books. This event features the book Mackinac Bridge: The Story of the Five-Mile Poem, by Gloria Whelan. Set in the 1950s, while the “Mighty Mac” was being built, the story introduces a young boy whose father will likely lose his business when the bridge is completed and covers the changes that progress brings and how people cope with those changes. Beautifully illustrated and well researched, this timely story coincides with the 50th anniversary (in 2007) of the official opening of the bridge. Michigan Notable Books is a statewide program that began as part of the 1991 Michigan Week celebration, geared to pay tribute and draw attention to the many people, places and things that make Michigan life unique. In that regard, Michigan Notable Books successfully highlights Michigan books and writers focusing on the Great Lakes State. Each title on the 2007 list gives readers insight into what it means to make your home in Michigan and proves that some of the greatest stories are indeed found in the Great Lakes region. This event will be held on Saturday, May 5th at 1pm and will be free and open to the public. For more information, please call 313-578-7585 or visit our website at www.detroitpubliclibrary.org. "Fueled by explosive adolescent energy and brimming with rebellion against the complacency of their conservative hometown, XBXRX has blinded their audiences with racks of colorful flashing lights, bombarded them with balloons and even abandoned the stage to incite dance riots and group hugs in an attempt to make the xbxrx experience something much more than just another show. The band has always sought to erase their individual identities and considers itself a flexible entity whose sum total is greater than the parts. Over the years the band's style of relentlessly joyous musical assault has been championed by many major figures in underground rock - having opened on tours with buddies such as Sonic Youth, Peaches, Unwound, Mr. Quintron, Deerhoof, and Q and not U as well as having worked with accomplished producers/engineers like Steve Albini, Don Zientara, Ian MacKaye, Vern Rumsey and Tim Kerr. Just $5, all ages welcome, doors at 8PM."
