The Why and How of Podcasting

Where: Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University

Date: 2007-09-04 18:00:00

Type:

Only a few years old, the burgeoning technology of podcasting was made popular by the music and entertainment industry and has been quickly adopted by broadcast and print media, educational institutions, corporations, religious organizations and other groups looking for an efficient and inexpensive way to broadcast their message. Defined as a multimedia file distributed over the Internet that allows for playback on personal computers and portable media devices, a podcast is distinguished from other digital formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically. In this hands-on course, instructor Jeff Frey will guide participants step by step through the process of planning, producing, publishing and promoting a podcast. Six Tuesdays, September 4-October 16, 2007, 6:00-9:00 p.m. (no class October 9) Limited enrollment Registration and fee information available on Rice GSCS Web site.

Victoria and the Victorians: A Bold New Portrait

Where: Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University

Date: 2007-09-20 14:00:00

Type:

For much of the past century we have pictured Victorians as people who lived sober, prudent lives in overstuffed houses filled with overstuffed furniture. Literature and history commonly depict Victorians as people who revere religion, family, country and social convention. But recent scholarship is dramatically changing this stereotypical portrait. Historian Newell Boyd will survey Great Britain from 1837 to 1901, emphasizing new research that challenges traditional views of Victorian times. What has emerged is a society that was more irreverent, less inhibited and more sensual than previously believed. Eight Thursdays, September 20-November 8, 2007, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Registration and fee information available on GSCS Web site.
