The Las Cruces Museum of Art will host the exhibition, "Ansel Adams, the Man Who Captured the Earths Beauty," from Friday, June 8 Saturday, Aug. 4. The Adams exhibit, organized by the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC, will include Las Cruces, NM in its 14 city national tour. Concurrently, the Museum will also present "American Photography: West Coast Visions," works of other nationally known photographers who were Adams contemporaries. They include Brett Weston, Paul Stand, Morley Baer, Al Weber, Willard Van Dyke and others. An opening reception on Saturday, June 9 from 10 - 11 a.m. will be followed a lecture about the works by photographer Paul Schranz. On Saturday, July 14, the Museum will host California photographer Al Weber, who will speak at 11 a.m. about his experiences with Ansel Adams. A colleague of Adams, Weber exhibited and taught with him at the Ansel Adams Yosemite Valley Workshops and at the Friends of Photography facility in Carmel CA. Webers work is among those in the "American Photography: West Coast Visions" exhibition. Ansel Adams (1902 1984) is one of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. Influential in the development of photography as an art form and recognized for his dramatic black and white photographs of the American wilderness, he was a gifted teacher, prolific writer and passionate environmentalist. His majestic photographs, darkroom technical expertise, and teaching skills brought him artistic acclaim. Adams was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980 for his work with the Sierra Club and his passion for wilderness conservation. The Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Registration will open at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14 for Fall Session 1 art classes for young people and adults at the Las Cruces Museum of Art. Class schedules and registration forms are available at the Museum and on the website http://www.museums.las-cruces.org. Classes will begin the week of Sept 10 and run through Oct. 20. Classes for adults include ceramics, individual projects in clay sculpture, drawing and painting techniques, painting with oils, weaving, and digital photography workshops in digital correction and enhancement and digital hand coloring. Classes for young artists include ceramics for 4 5, 6 8, and 9 12 years olds; and drawing and painting for students ages 6 - 12. A new digital photography class is offered for students 10 12 years (students need access to a camera for this class). The Museums Saturday Studio for Kids is open every Saturday for kids ages 5 12 from 10 11:30 am. The cost is $5 per student, and there is no pre-registration. Classes are limited to 10 students, first come first served. Sign-up begins at 9:30 am. The Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 501 N. Main St. in the downtown mall. Works of art by seniors from the Las Cruces city high schools will be on display in the galleries of the Las Cruces Museum of Art from Friday, April 20 through Saturday, April 28. A free opening reception and awards presentation for the artists will be held on Friday, April 20 from 5 7 p.m. The high school seniors work covers the gamut of artistic media, including ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and painting, photography and mixed media. The event will be catered by senior students in high school culinary arts programs, who will also receive awards for their presentations. Judges for the exhibition are Louis Ocepek, Miranda Howe, Julia Barrela and Flo Dougherty. The Museum of Art is located in the downtown mall at 491 N. The second in the Visit Our Ancestors series of cemetery tours organized by Branigan Cultural Center in Las Cruces will meet at the Las Cruces Masonic Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10. The programs are free and open to the public. No registration is required. The two-hour tour will begin at the corner of Compress and Brown, which is the oldest section of the cemetery. This is a large cemetery, so participants should be sure to wear comfortable shoes. It is also recommended that participants use plenty of sunscreen, and wear long sleeved shirts and hats. Bottled water will be available. The tour will also cross the street to visit the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Among the notables buried at the Masonic Cemetery are Thomas and Alice Branigan, A. J. Fountain, John Newbrough, W.W. Cox, and Pat Garrett, and participants will learn more about these important local figures on the tour. The Visit Our Ancestors series takes place at selected cemeteries in the Las Cruces area every other month. In September the series continues at the Tortugas Cemetery and at the Community Cemetery in November. Award-winning Santa Fe artist and teacher Jakki Kouffman will exhibit brightly colored, gestural landscape paintings in Sandstone, Rivers and Sea at the Las Cruces Museum of Art from Friday, March 7 Saturday, April 5. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, March 7 from 5 7 pm. The exhibit features recent works in acrylic with imagery drawn from nature, memory and the imagination. Kouffman has shown her work across the country and won awards in many venues. Her painting, Cholla Blossoms, River Below, was recently installed at the Mesilla Community Center through New Mexico Arts, Art in Public Places. Kouffman was elected a Master Pastellist with the Pastel Society of America in 1992. She has had solo exhibits at the Wichita Museum, the Hutchinson Museum and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Her work appears in several books, including The Artist and the American Landscape by John Driscoll and Arnold Skolnick, Painting Alaska by Kes Woodward, and Messages from Alaska, published by the M.J. Murdock Foundation. A native of Boston, Kouffman resides in Santa Fe. A graduate of Brandeis University, she was awarded a Sachar International Fellowship to study in Pietrasanta, Italy, and studied painting at the Art Students League of New York. Kouffman has taught workshops around the country for more than 20 years. She presently teaches at Santa Fe Community College Continuing Education. The Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 501 N.
