This trio of Iranian expatriates creates a globe-spanning sound. Niyaz (which translates as “yearning” or “longing” in both Farsi and Urdu) blends the poetry of Rumi with exotic trance music. Crossing back and forth over centuries of musical expression, they combine ancient instruments, rhythms and tonalities with acoustic music and electronica — ushering in a new era of artistic possibilities for Iranian music. Meet the artists following the performance in the Grand Pavilion. Tickets are $30, and $7 with a valid student ID.

This trio from Austin, TX, draws on a wellspring of musical influences, including western swing, hot jazz, traditional fiddle tunes and Tin Pan Alley standards, all done up with a level of energy and vitality that gives the songs a modern sensibility. After immersing himself in the recordings of Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Will Rast began attending St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Potomac, MD, and quickly became the anchor of the school's award winning jazz band. One of New Orleans' venerable Mardi Gras Indian tribes (actually African-American), The Wild Magnolias perform and record only sporadically, but when they do it's always a funky party. The Pine Leaf Boys are a new generation of Cajun musicians from Louisiana who not only grew up with the music but live and breathe it. They play authentic, traditional Cajun, Creole and zydeco music while adding some updates of their own. The group is famous for its hard-driving approach to Cajun music that had one Boston Globe reviewer comparing them to the irresistible jazz swing of Django Reinhardt. The core group membership is Balfa (guitar, vocals), Dirk Powell (accordion) and Courtney Granger (vocals, fiddle).
