Smile Brigade consider themselves to be a pop band, priding themselves on nice hooks and solid arrangements of great songs. Their sound sports a likely pairing of late sixties compression drenched drum sounds, and the Jesus And Mary Chains penchant for baritone vocals heavy on the reverb.

April 3 & 4, 8pm April 5, 8pm April 6, 2pm $22 ONCE ON THIS ISLAND is based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy. The show is a twist on the traditional "Little Mermaid" tale, and tells the story of Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl who falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy whose life she saves after a car crash. Set in the French Antilles, Once On This Island boasts a score that is immediately and continually reflective of this locale. There are rousing, upbeat numbers like "Mama Will Provide," and "Some Say," as well as poignant ballads like "The Human Heart"and "Forever Yours". While some of the numbers stand on their own, there can be no mistaking a song from "Once On This Island" with a song from any other show, because Ahrens and Flaherty never betray the story's Caribbbean roots.

Mer

Based out of Chicago, MER began as a singer songwriter. Originally influenced by James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, and other folk music, MER found his form of honest expression through voice and guitar. Cafe's and small bars allowed MER to develop his stage presence at an early age. Eventually, influences spread to funk and jazz in the stylings of James Brown, Prince, John Scofield, and Madeski, Martin, and Wood. Consistent growth has opened up MER's influences to progressive rock bands such as Rush, Porcupine Tree, Muse, and Mars Volta.

Bottomless Pit

Bottomless Pit was formed in the fall of 2005 by erstwhile Silkworm members Tim Midgett and Andy Cohen. Their longtime friends Chris Manfrin (Seam) and Brian Orchard (.22) complete the quartet. Spring 2006 finds the group playing "their blues"--soulful, emotionally intense, and often transcendent postpunk that is as inviting as it is bracing. Texas and the Buddy Revelles rocks with a modern alternative rock sound.
