The Bang on A Can All-Stars

Where: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Date: 2008-02-09 20:00:00

Type:

Since its inception in 1987, the Bang on a Can festival has been discovering and presenting the most exciting performers who have committed their lives to the music of our time. Over ten years, Bang on a Can has found a number of these musicians -- performers who are adventurous, virtuosic, dynamic and intense, who are equally at home with the diverse styles that exist within music today. Six players in particular kept coming back. They were among the festival's finest artists -- six of the most accomplished performers of new music in the world. With these six players the festival created the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Their instrumentation is unique -- clarinets and saxophones, electric guitar, cello, bass, keyboards, percussion -- and doesn't seem to fit in any recognizable category...part classical ensemble, part rock band, part jazz band.

Elbow

Where: Bimbo's 365 Club

Date: 2008-05-08 08:00:00

Type:

Injecting a wider range of emotions into their music than most of their guitar-based peers in England, Elbow referred to themselves as "prog without the solos" without winking. Based in Manchester, the band went through a couple of developmental stages before settling on its sound, playing locally and attracting record label interest. Elbow's first EPs 'Newborn' and 'Any Day Now' were released by Manchester indie Uglyman. V2 eventually caught notice and signed them, releasing 'Asleep in the Back.' The record was short-listed as a nominee for 2001's Mercury Prize, arriving in the U.S. in early 2002. Their most recent effort is 'The Seldom Seen Kid.'
