Dedicated to Chaos, a multi-media performance piece with live music and painting created by Jessica Lurie and Danijel Zezelj, comes to McLeod Residence on Saturday, June 21 at 8:30 p.m. The performance features Lurie on saxophone, accordion and voice and painting by Zezelj, with Will Dowd on drums and Paul Kemmish on bass. Entry is a suggested $8 donation at the door. Dedicated to Chaos is described as a visual and musical journey unfolding in slow-motion before the audience. The performance is built on a formal duality of music and painting, adding the dimension of space to music and the dimension of time to painting. The painting is created in black, white and red acrylic on a board or canvas and combines the expressionism of graffiti with the atmosphere of a shadow play. The music is a combination of composed pieces and improvisation, rooted in energetic free jazz with influences from Klezmer, blues, punk and funk. The juxtaposition of preset forms against the free improvisation and abstraction creates both tension and conflict, with the performance acting as a bridge between chaos and order. This performance is one of many created by Danijel Zezelj and Jessica Lurie, in collaboration with a variety of musicians. Their previous multi-media shows have been presented at festivals, galleries, clubs and churches in the United States, Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Croatia. Jessica Lurie is a composer, collaborator, and instrumentalist (alto & tenor saxophone, clarinet, flute, accordion, voice) from Seattle who is now based in Brooklyn. She performs, composes and arranges for The Jessica Lurie Ensemble (JLE), The Tiptons Sax Quartet, The Living Daylights Trio, Latin funk group La Buya, Roman Dogs and the Andrew Drury/Jessica Lurie Duo. She has collaborated in a wide range of musical styles with international artists such as Bill Frisell, The Indigo Girls, Jenny Scheinman, Mike Clark, Sleater Kinney, Amy Denio, NYC's Circus Amok, Nels Cline, Great Small Works, James Blood Ulmer, Calvin Weston, Ellen Fullman, The Jacob Fred Jazz Odessy, Eyvind Kang, Wayne Horvitz, Kenny Wollesson, Allison Miller, Frank London and DJ Logic. She has participated in over 30 releases as a bandleader and collaborator, and is working on a new album of her music to be released this year. Danijel Zezelj is a graphic artist and illustrator and author of more than twenty graphic novels. He lives and works between Brooklyn and Zagreb. His comics and illustrations have appeared in magazines and anthologies in Croatia, Slovenia, England, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the United States. He has been published by DC Comics/Vertigo, Marvel Comics, The New York Times Book Review, Harper's Magazine, the San Francisco Guardian and the Washington Chronicle. McLeod Residence, located at 2209 Second Avenue in Seattle, Washington, is a home for extraordinary living through art, technology and collaboration. Proprietors Buster McLeod and Lele McLeod founded McLeod Residence in 2006. McLeod Residence is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. A HOME MOVIE DAY MEMORIAL If you grew up before PowerPoint, you've surely spent at least a few hours in a darkened room as someone clicked through a carousel of slide transparencies and, probably, bored you. But as they say, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. When artist/filmmaker Paige Sarlin heard that Eastman Kodak was bowing to the digital age and halting its production of slide projectors in 2004, she began a project that resulted in the documentary film THE LAST SLIDE PROJECTOR. Screening followed by curated selection of local personal slide shows.
