From the deconstructionist satire, MPG: Motion Picture Genocide, to the far-reaching critique of image co-modification and cultural martyrdom in the infamous X: The Baby Cinema, Banks has shown a brillance that continues to be underappreciated. So it should come as no surprise that MOCA, in collaboration with Banks, will show seven of his best know short films, complete with new original scores composed the night of by audio/cut-up collective, The Lusty Moors. High on Fire, featuring former members of the defunct, post-metal outfit Sleep, shares a similar penchant for brutal audio assaults as well as furious and unrelenting bouts of mind-altering heaviness. Formed in Brooklyn in 2000, this five-member group performs punk music with a political theme. Mono plays amazingly loud instrumental rock. The group is originally from Japan.

Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental band from Chicago. It would be tough to imagine that a band would be able to develop its own unique presence and innovation with such solid groundwork in the instrumental genre. However, Russian Circles does bring something new to the table. Their songs feel incredibly narrative and linear. There is no angular flash or mathematical flair. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea. They are gargantuan in scope. They flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost. Variety is no gimmick and they are a band that does not just vacillate within an achieved sonic identity. Dub Trio brings dub to life. Usually, it is long mixing sessions that truly transform music into a dub/version, but Dub Trio is unique in that they create their original dub sound in real-time on stage! Dalek performs a heady, smoky brand of underground, experimental rap music.

Studio of 5 Rings presents abstract digital works from local artist Scott Mann. The show will open with a wine, cheese and appetizer reception Friday April 18th from 5:00 - 9:00pm. Mann will be on hand to answer questions about his works. The show will run until Saturday June 14th. Scott Mann - Having worked as a model and photo assistant for hometown friend and now New York based photographer Steve Vaccariello, Scott developed an interest to be behind the lens. It was Vaccariello who actually gave Scott his first camera. Scott has been shooting a variety of media over the years. His most recent interest is 'digital painting' on his images, which has created his latest works. Mann's digital works begin with an ordinary image which he "morphs" into an abstract work. The digital painting process first begins with one of his own original photos. A working 'wet' palette is then created from the selected photo. By using a mouse or pen palette, he uses a variety of brushes, styles, textures and techniques to create his abstract image.
