Irving Berlin and Al Jolson were among many early 20th century Jewish artists with an affinity for blackface minstrelsy. They composed ragtime, put on burnt cork and vaulted from immigrant upstarts to pop stars. But what about Jews who wore "Jew face?" Music historian Jody Rosen explores Jewish dialect songs and novelty hits performed by vaudeville's "Hebrew comedians." Why did Jewish audiences thrill to songs that seemed to slander them? What hidden history links Over the Rainbow and God Bless America to Yonkle, the Cowboy Jew and When Moses with His Nose Leads the Band? Hear for yourself as Rosen makes history come alive! "Being a professional DJ was never my goal or intention in any way, shape, or form," he admits. "I wanted to play live music, that's my favorite thing in the world. It's weird because you get different energies from people, people expect things, want things, or dog you. I'm just doing my thing solely because I love it so don't be judging me too hard. Marc Acito, author of How I Paid for College will be reading selections from his new novel, Attack of the Theater People. In praising How I Paid for College the New York Times Book Review said, it "makes you hope there's a lot more where this came from." There is. In this hilarious sequel Attack of the Theater People Edward Zanni and his merry crew of high school musical-comedy miscreants move to the magical wonderland that is Manhattan. It is 1986, and aspiring actor Edward Zanni has been kicked out of drama school for being "too jazz hands for Julliard." Mortified, Edward heads out into the urban jungle of eighties New York City and finally lands a job as a "party motivator" who gets thirteen-year-olds to dance at bar mitzvahs and charms businesspeople as a "stealth guest" at corporate events. When he accidentally gets caught up in insider trading with a handsome stockbroker named Chad, only the help of his crew from "How I Paid for College "can rescue him from a stretch in Club Fed. Laced with the inspired zaniness of classic American musical comedy, Attack of the Theater People matches the big hair of the eighties with an even bigger heart. About the Marc Acito: Marc Acito's debut novel, "How I Paid for College" won the Ken Kesey Award for the Novel and was also selected as an Editors' Choice by The New York Times. Acito is a popular contributor to The New York Times and National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," He lives in Portland, Oregon. * * * Books Inc. is a locally owned and operated independent bookseller with 10 locations in California. No plan for Saturday yet? Come out & join us for some pool at this cozy poolroom with cool red cloth pool tables, great service & fun environment!! Hi, I am hosting another social pool mixer. As usual, we would be rotating people around the tables every 30-45 minutes. Below is the details. Our event usually has 25-30 people showed up (Please ignore the number of RSVPs on the Upcoming.Org site as I would be promoting the events via a few channels.) When: Saturday March 28th 7:00pm-10:30pm Location: Shoreline Billiards at 1400 North Shoreline Blvd. #C-1, Mountain View Cost: $15.00/person to be collected when signing in. If you'd like to stay & play for longer after the event finished at 10:30pm, Shoreline Billiards offers us a $5 flat fee per person til they close at 2am as long as they don't have a waiting list. RSVP: Please email me @ soyeeng@gmail.com by Friday March 27th. I need your FULL name, email address, number of guests (if any) with their names, phone number optional. Although RSVP is not required, it would be helpful to let me know if you plan on coming. I don't have email access after 4pm on Sat, so if you do decide to join us the last minute, simply show up. How we'll find each other: Ask for Shirley's or BAPBSC's group How it works: 1. I would rotate people around tables every 40-45 minutes. Table assignment is random, though I would make my best effort to make sure a good gender mix per table. 2. I would try to have 4 people per table. 3. Since we would be rotating, it's less confusing if everyone plays the same rules. Game rules can be emailed if requested & is available on the event date. 4. When table assignment has announced, everyone has to move to their next assigned table even if you "think" you are almost done with the game, since it's impossible for every table to finish at the same time, that way it won't slow down the table rotation for everyone. 5. If you need to leave early, please let me know 10 min before you actually leave, so I would leave your name out for next rotation. To be notified with our future pool events, go to yahoo.com, then go to "group", search for BAPBSC (Stands for Bay Area Pool, Billiards, Snooker Club), then select to join/ subscribe to the club. It is FREE to join. IMPORTANT: If you don't have Yahoo ID, please email me at soyeeng@gmail.com with your email address, I would manually add you as member. I look forward to seeing you all again then. Shirley
