How is a heritage turkey different from its factory farm counterpart? What is a Blenheim apricot and why should we preserve it for posterity? How can we all enjoy local, affordable, and sustainably produced food? The answers will be apparent at the first Slow Food Nation, a celebration of American food organized by Slow Food USA for May 1-4, 2008 in San Francisco. San Francisco is poised to be at the center of a movement with global implications. Experts such as Alice Waters and Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, are anchoring the task force planning the four-day celebration, which will embody the values of the Slow Food movement and illustrate how food and agriculture form a complex global tapestry of cultural, political, and environmental issues. In addition to education through taste, the event will offer a wide range of activities for all ages, including talks, forums, workshops, and films that will teach people the importance of preserving traditional foods and production techniques—and alert them to the broader implications of their eating choices. A marketplace of over two hundred farmers and artisans from across the country will showcase the range of traditional American foods. Attracted by the simple pleasures of the table, participants will leave having learned how American food production affects global issues, including greenhouse gas emissions, childhood obesity, famine in the developing world, and the disappearance of the small farmer. Attendees will emerge with a broad-based vision of the life-enriching benefits of a sustainable approach to food and life, as well as the tools and personal connections to implement that vision. Vale 8PM ABEL RAISES CAIN: (82 min.) a documentary by Jenny Abel and Jeff Hockett Long before the deluge of reality TV dolts who drum up media attention with acts of idiocy, there was Alan Abel, a culture-jamming comic wit a conscience. The director of the 1970s cult films IS THERE SEX AFTER DEATH? and THE FAKING OF THE PRESIDENT, Abel has made a name for himself several times over with media stunts that are just ridiculous enough to be believable – especially to a media that feeds on salacious, far-fetched stories. Abel's mock-moral crusade "Citizens Against Breastfeeding" stirred controversy in the late 1990s, just as his "Society for Indecency to Naked Animals" had in the 1960s. Both groups made asinine calls for morality in America, and while both were complete jokes, for long stretches the only one in on the jokes was Abel himself and whomever he had brought along for the ride. From time to time, that "whomever" was his daughter, Jenny Abel. ABEL RAISES CAIN is Jenny's film, and it is as much a biography of her father as it is an exploration of her family life. What was it like to be raised by a man who always had a trick up his sleeve, and whose tricks always brought the media vultures swirling? Jenny was ostensibly in on the jokes, but, as we see in this oddly poignant film, it was never easy being raised by the one throwing the punch lines. ALO's acoustic guitar madman Dan Lebowitz fronts his own band with ALO bassist Steve Adams and a host of other guests. Forest Sun presents a seamless, deceptively simple interweaving of roots, jazz, folk, gospel, soul and speakeasy blues. He brings a naked, unaffected soul to his writing, playing and singing, which give every note an word he drops a simple conviction that just can't be faked or affected. Though only in his mid '20s, Jesse P. Cutler is easily identified as that rare form of singer/songwriter, an original whose work somehow feels familiar. There is an assured quality to both his vocals and his steel-stringed acoustic guitar playing as though they were the work of an artist long-established as a professional in his craft, rather than one embarking on a career.
