This breathtaking, 15-hour-plus film, based on Alfred Döblin’s great modernist novel, was the crowning achievement of a prolific director who, at age 34, had already made 40 films, including The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lola. It follows the hulking, childlike ex-convict Franz Biberkopf (Günter Lamprecht) as he attempts to become “an honest soul” amid the corrosive urban landscape of Weimar-era Germany. With equal parts cynicism and humanity, Fassbinder details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggling to survive in a viciously uncommon time. Presented in 4 segments screened over 4 days. See a display of original posters from Fassbinder films—including Lili Marleen, Veronika Voss, and Fear Eats the Soul—along with quotes from some of today’s most renowned filmmakers, including Atom Egoyan, Aki Kaurismaki, Istvan Szabo, Akin Fatih, and Mike Leigh. Tickets: Each screening: $14 general admission; $10 members, students, and seniors. Pass for all screenings: $40 general admission, $35 for members, students and seniors. Co-presented by the Goethe-Institut, Boston.
