Where: Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center

Date: 2007-06-10 00:00:00

This seven-day silent meditation retreat will teach practices that lead to a deeper experience of the indwelling presence of God. Judaism teaches that creation flows from vision to form to substance — from God's infinite thought to holy letters, to Torah, to our human forms and to all of life. Core techniques of this retreat will be rooted in traditional Jewish meditations using breath, mantra, guided imagery and Hebrew letters. They will also incorporate Torah-Yoga Movement practices, which open and strengthen the body to receive Divine energy through the letters of the Aleph-Bet. For both beginner and advanced meditation practitioners.

Video Dork - Bring Your Short Video

Where: The Tank

Date: 2007-12-16 18:00:00

Type:

Amid the chatter of big breaks from success on YouTube, the launch last year of dozens of internet video sites, and the mainstreaming of short-filmmaking attempted by Fox's disastrous "On The Lot," there is less and less space in our screen-culture for the simple pleasures of public exhibition, let alone for good filmmaking. We here at The Tank think that's a crying shame, and we've decided to do something about it. Video Dork is a monthly short film competition held at The Tank. That's right, a COMPETITION. Each month, there will be a WINNER, and there will be PRIZES. Competing filmmakers will bring DVDs or MiniDV tapes containing films of any genre of five minutes or less to the Tank. The first hour or so of material to arrive will be screened for the assembled masses. At the end of the screening hour, a brief intermission will allow time for all those in attendance to vote for the winner of the evening's prizes. Prizes Each month's winner will receive a one-day pass to the Paley Center for Media (formerly the Museum of Television and Radio), in addition to his or her choice of the following: - Two free days with a professional video lighting kit from Hello World Communications ( www.hwc.tv) - A half-day consultation with professional music editor Suzana Peric (Lord of the Rings, Everything is Illuminated, http://imdb.com/name/nm0673726/). - Two free days with a Panasonic HVX video camera from Mikey Palmer, the Video Dork himself. - A free one-year membership to the Paley Center for Media ( www.paleymediacouncil.org). We are constantly soliciting other prizes that will be useful to filmmakers working on a budget. For further information on Video Dork, contact Mikey Palmer at videodork@thetanknyc.org. Cost: Free ($5 suggested) Official Site: http://www.thetanknyc.org

“Deaf” Comedy Jam ASL In The Raw Returns To Comix!

Where: Comix

Date: 2008-03-20 20:00:00

Type:

Hosts, Doug Ridloff and Jason Norman are breaking ground for the Deaf community by blending skits, character sketches, storytelling, and guest stars in their encore production of ASL in the Raw at Comix March 20th at 8:00 PM. Doug Ridloff is a nice Jewish boy gone blue. Born and raised in Queens, Doug’s early dirty encounters involved only the soil and grass in his backyard. After earning a B.A. in Physical Education and a M.A. in Special Education, he went out and saw the world and some more dirt-Central America, Europe, and Asia. Doug saw that there was a universal sense of humor: body language and gestures about sex. He began a new collection of “blue” jokes and stories to shake up the Deaf community. Jason Norman is a D.C. native and a NYC convert, bringing you the raw and naughty flavors of both worlds. For over three years now, Jason has hosted the monthly ASL Poetry and Storytelling at the Bowery Poetry Club. For far too long, American Sign Language on the stage has been “clean and safe.” Inspired by classic comedians back in the day like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Andrew Dice Clay, Jason realized it was time to penetrate the boundaries of ASL and get down and dirty. This is a show that must be seen! Thursday, March 20th @ 8:00 PM Comix 353 West 14th Street New York, NY 10014 Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day-of-show plus two item minimum in the showroom. Tickets are available at the box office, by calling 212.524.2500 or at www.comixny.com. ABOUT COMIX Opened in September 2006, the comedy nightclub Comix has quickly defined itself as the premier comedy club in New York City. Comix is Zagat’s highest rated comedy venue and was dubbed “one of the top six clubs in the country” by the Hollywood Reporter. Ever wonder what it would be like to see city crushing monsters duke it out in the ring? They may not be that large, but the monsters of the Kaiju Big Battel universe are fearsome and expansive. Currently, the Kaiju Universe maintains an active roster of approximately 30 monsters, including a blue alien-glutton named Sky Deviler, a worker-turned-soup-can called Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle, a dirty-hare-sage dubbed Dusto Bunny, Uchu Chu the Space Bug (self-explanatory), and a despicable, square-headed mad scientist known as Dr. Cube. Battels typically take place in a standard-size wrestling ring, lined with miniature cityscape and random, over-sized Japanese monster-movie props.
