Ecocity World Summit

Where: Nob Hill Masonic Center

Date: 2008-04-23 00:00:00

Type:

The Ecocity World Summit will address the ecological city, town and village from the perspectives of people, nature, sustainable development, economies and technologies, and incentives and support structures. Join together with an international community of inspired change-makers who are putting their time and talents to work addressing crucial problems of the world's environment with thoughtful and long-range solutions that are truly sustainable, ecologically healthy and socially just. The time to act is now. Life-threatening global environmental problems and limitations on resource consumption demand a restructuring of cities and transportation systems worldwide for long-term energy efficiency and conservation. Concerned citizens in every community - in every city, town and village - must get involved in formulating and implementing new land use and transportation policies and practices, preserving agricultural lands and open space, and reclaiming natural habitat. Bonnie Hayes

Where: Rockit Room

Date: 2007-12-01 20:00:00

Type:

An experienced and popular teacher, Bonnie has taught at the Blue Bear Music School and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. She is a talented musician, writer and producer. Jay Nash is a Los Angeles based inspired singer songwriter. Nash's music recalls a Los Angeles thought to be long since extinct, a romantic dream land where inspiration flowed from one artist to another with songs about late nights, friends and lovers, songs which grew organically and were created spontaneously. He's a throwback for sure, smart with a hook, and brave enough to bare the fragile truth in a song. Amber Rubarth is a acoustic pop singer/songwriter with a twist of the blues. Megan Slankard has got the edge of Alanis Morrisette, the rhythm of Ani DiFranco, the soul of Patty Griffin and the cute girl-next-door voice of Lisa Loeb. In her sharp, punchy, original tunes, she weaves together her passionate, gorgeous and bluesy voice. Backed by a five-star band and delivering a rootsy and sincere vocal performance, Elliot Randall comes as a breath of fresh air to concert goers everywhere.

Phil Chambliss: The Arkansas Auteur Phil Chambliss in person! What if Fellini had lived in a trailer in rural Arkansas? His films might look something like the work of Phil Chambliss. With the help of friends and his co-workers at the gravel pit, this self-taught ‘folk art filmmaker’ has created, for over 25 years, an alternate reality where deer hunting is the sport of choice and phones only work when under water. These totally unique and often hilarious films depict life in the Arkansas outback and convey a strong sense of place and authentic regional flavor. The programs features Shadow of the Hatchet Man, about a rampaging killer and an inept sheriff, complete with spaghetti western motifs and lesbian overtones; and surprise shorts. When: 7:30 on Thursday, November 15 and Friday, November 16 Who: Films by Phil Chambliss, who will be attending in person Public Info: 415-978-2787 or www.ybca.org $8 regular; $6 students, seniors, teachers and YBCA Members

OPEN MIC at the HOTEL UTAH http://theutah.org The Hotel Utah open mic is the epicenter of San Francisco's singer-songwriter community. Its stage attracts performers at all stages of their careers: from seasoned veterans to first-timers. It attracts music fans who know a good thing when they see it. The musicians who come regularly don't come just to get a little "stage time" - they come because of the community that calls Monday at The Utah home - and the musicians that come in for the first time eventually start to come regularly... So come on down this monday, have a beer, bring your guitar if that's your thing, and sit back and enjoy. FEATURE PERFORMER - GG TANAKA http://www.myspace.com/ggtanaka I was born and raised just across the bay on an island called Alameda. My influences range from ABBA, Hank Williams, Dead Kennedy's, Beatles, Ani Difranco, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Weird Al, Jimi Hendrix to the Violent Femmes. I'm currently playing in 4 projects(bands) - >> the Todd Shipley band http://www.toddshipley.com >> G.G. Tanaka electric band >> a Violent Femmes tribute band and >> a solo act http://www.myspace.com/ggtanaka I also host an Open Mic on Tuesday's at a bar named Mcgrath's in Alameda. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/venue/12431/ On the first Wednesday of December(12/5), I'll also be hosting an Open Mic in Berkeley at a bar/restuarant called Beckett's. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/321762 Even though I have a lot of original songs, I found myself playing hundreds over cover tunes because I had to play for hours at a time. But with the inspiration of venues like the Utah and my friends(Todd Shipley, Kevnn4, Andy Mason, Dave Gursom, D-Rel,...) I now find myself playing more of my own stuff. Thanks. Music has always been fun and a release for me, so as long as it still is I still will. On the 26th feature I will be playing with my newly formed band "the G.G. Tanaka Electric Band", the members include... Kevnn4 on drums and Dave(diesel, digits, G.) Gursom on bass. I hope you enjoy the show.

Company C Contemporary Ballet

Where: Cowell Theater

Date: 2008-02-09 20:00:00

Type:

Company C Contemporary Ballet is pleased to announce its fifth season of bringing exemplary contemporary choreography to the Bay Area. The Company will present Program A of its 2008 repertoire including works by David Parsons, Antony Tudor, Alexandre Proia and Artistic Director, Charles Anderson at the Cowell Theater, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, February 9-10, 2008. The Envelope New to the Company C Contemporary Ballet's 2008 repertoire will be David Parsons' hilarious signature work The Envelope. Set to Rossini, the ballet pits seven dancers in black hooded garments and aviator goggles against a persistent piece of stationery. Described as "ingenious" by Anna Kisselgoff of the New York Times, this deceptively simple work is one of Parsons' best creations. Jaime Martinez, former Associate Artistic Director and a founding member of Parsons' Dance, set the work on the Company in September. Dark Elegies Also on the program will be Antony Tudor's rarely performed 1937 masterpiece, Dark Elegies, in which Tudor laid important groundwork for the development of contemporary ballet and modern dance. His masterful use of emotionally motivated movement, set to heartbreakingly beautiful songs by Gustav Mahler, tells a story of grief and loss in a small community. Rhapsody in Blue Program A also includes Alexandre Proia's Rhapsody in Blue, a playful, flirtatious ballet for four dancers. Commissioned by the 2007 Mendocino Music Festival for a performance of Gershwin's famous classical-jazz composition, Rhapsody in Blue returns to the repertoire for a second season after earning standing ovations from audiences in 2007. Hush The final piece on the program will be Artistic Director Charles Anderson's Hush. Re-choreographed in 2007 to include male dancers, this ballet is a graceful exploration of movement quality choreographed to the musical collaboration of Bobbi McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma. $30 adult / $20 student and senior.
