On Saturday, May 3, Conspiracy of Beards, San Francisco’s rough and ready 30-man a cappella group who perform exclusively the songs of Leonard Cohen, will host a CD release party at the Make Out Room. The CD features original arrangements of five of their (er, Leonard’s) most popular songs, and will be available at the show. Helping them to usher in their first recording effort will be Ben Grass and Barbara Garber, who arrive onstage armed with one acoustic guitar and two voices that harmonize into a hauntingly gorgeous landscape from another place and time. Transforming Cohen’s simple melodies into complex 4- and 5-part harmonies, the group achieves a sound that is both robust and tender. One can hear influences of indie rock, jazz, gospel, barbershop, classical and even doo-wop in the unique arrangements the choir selects. Conspiracy of Beards has had a string of acclaimed performances at Bay Area venues, including Great American Music Hall, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Cafe du Nord, and just recently in New York at the Highline Ballroom, Bowery Poetry Club, and the Whitney Museum. For more information on Conspiracy of Beards, along with excerpts from their new cd, check out www.myspace.com/conspiracyofbeards and www.conspiracyofbeards.com.

May 2nd – 8th, San Francisco will hold a premiere for the film "Dhamma Brothers" at the Red Vic. A description of the film follows - hope to see everyone there! East meets West in the Deep South. An overcrowded maximum-security prison – the end of the line in Alabama’s correctional system – is forever changed by the influence of an ancient meditation program, Vipassana. Donaldson Correctional Facility, situated in the Alabama countryside southwest of Birmingham, holds 1500 of the state’s most dangerous criminals. Behind high security towers and a double row of barbed wire and electrical fence, dwells a host of convicts who will never see the light of day. But for some of these men, a spark was ignited. In January 2002, Donaldson Correctional Facility became the first maximum security prison in North America to hold an extended Vipassana retreat, an emotionally and physically demanding course of silent meditation lasting 10 days. The Dhamma Brothers tells a dramatic tale of human potential and transformation as it closely follows and documents the stories of 36 prison inmates who enter into this arduous and intensive program. It challenges assumptions about the nature of prisons as places of punishment rather than rehabilitation and raises the question : is it possible for these men, some of whom have committed horrendous crimes, to change?
