Where: Brickbottom Artists Building

Date: 2008-01-16 19:00:00

Event Description: An Overview of Pylons: A rapid-development framework for web applications, embracing WSGI Pylons is a highly flexible, extensible MVC-style web framework that builds heavily on established, best-of-breed libraries for optimal code reuse and strength of individual stack components. It is also very forward-thinking in design, tightly integrating technologies like WSGI and setup tools that many consider to be the future of Python web development. Pylons has also been selected as the basis of Turbogears 2.0, promising increased adoption and even more active development. Perhaps the biggest challenge that Pylons presents to the new developer is diving in: the flexibility afforded by using existing libraries makes it difficult to know where to begin, and which components are responsible for different aspects of your applications. This presentation will offer a broad overview of the components that make up Pylons, how they interoperate, and how you might swap out some -- such as object-relational mapper or templating engine -- for ones of your choosing. We'll also briefly discuss WSGI, the concept of middleware, and practical concerns such as deployment. Finally, we'll look at a small sample application, and propose additional topics if time allows, such as facilities Pylons provides for conveniently building REST and XML-RPC web services. Often considered a "hackers' framework," you'll see that Pylons provides nearly all of the conveniences of other "full stack" frameworks, including sessions management, caching and form validation. We'll explore some of the luxuries and challenges you'll face in Pylons development today, as well as forthcoming features and clean-up as the framework moves toward 1.0. Hopefully you'll leave equipped to jump into experimenting with Pylons, without first spending days getting acquainted. As usual, drinks and pizza will be served -- thanks for the donations they go to the cost of food and the use of Meetup.

Are you looking for like-minded progressives to hang out with in Boston? Want to cross-promote your events and campaigns? Are you new to the area and looking for groups to get involved in? Are you psyched about building strong cross-issue coalitions? Join Socializing for Justice at Sacco's Bowl Haven for Billiards for Justice - Wednesday, February 13th at 6:30pm No program. No speaker. Just arrive and enjoy yourself. RSVP (greatly appreciated!) at www.sojust.org -newcomers always welcome! We're heading to Sacco's Bowl Haven in Davis Square for some cue and pocket action. We'll have a couple of tables reserved for the pool sharks, but plenty of non-billiards hanging out as well (not to mention candlepin bowling in the very next room!) At Socializing for Justice (SoJust) events you can hang out with friends, make new ones, find a date, get the scoop on a job, and find out what's going on this weekend - political or social. And the best part is that SoJust members share your vision of building a more just world. If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers to share - and there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network in between rounds at the table. Sacco's Bowl Haven is at 45 Day Street in Somerville. It is right by the Davis Square T Station on the Red Line (map). $5.00 to play + $2 group fee to cover expenses. From our FAQs: "It's not very easy for me to meet new people and I'm not really one for small talk." We hear you. That's why at SoJust events, in addition to traditional name tags, we have "Ask Me About" and "Looking For" tags. That way you can slap whatever you're into lately up on your shirt and wait for fellow SoJusters to approach you. These seem to do the trick of moving past the basic "where do you live? what do you do for work?" questions to conversations that lead to more substantial connections. "What actually happens at events?" You'll always be greeted by friendly folks who can help get you socializing, introduce you to people, and chat with you about questions or wishes. It's likely a few people will be there promoting their campaigns and issues (yes, SoJust welcomes that sort of behavior). At our bigger events, there's always a literature table to toss down flyers, postcards, and other paraphenalia about events around town. Most importantly, we can pretty much guarantee there will be someone there you've never met before. As one of our members said, "You are bringing together people who might never get together otherwise - if that ain't a step towards justice I don't know what is." Wanna know more about SoJust? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions and Event Photos.

Todd Snider's songs are often rich in wit, often hilarious, delivering clear critiques of society. Some are intimate ballads and some are good-natured romps celebrating life. Detroit natives David Weiss (David Was) and Don Fagenson (Don Was), formed Was (Not Was) in 1980. The group features vocals by former O'Jays singer Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson among others. Their hits include 'Spy in the House of Love' and 'Walk the Dinosaur.' A new two CD compilation of the group is set for release on Shout! Factory.

Skillfully maneuvering lush vocals around her unique guitar rhythms, 2007 Boston Music Award Nominee, Jen Murdza is an eye-catching, ear-catching performer who will take you instantly by surprise. With a fresh songwriting style built on an almost sarcastic marriage of somber lyrics and playful, rhythmic grooves, Murdza blurs genres like no other. Her final sound is an addictive, foot-stomping mix of "SoulfulJazzyCountry-friedRockaBluesy" with a voice bigger than her body. The Boston Herald agrees and writes, Jen has a "strikingly supple voice". “...Soulful standout..." -BOSTON.COM
