Mute Math

Where: Slim's

Date: 2007-04-24 20:00:00

Type:

The Mute Math dynamic can be viewed in parts. At its core, an inspired electro-alt rock band with a soaring sound that incorporates emotive vocals, hip hop styled beats, dubby soundscapes fueled by sample-like guitars and Rhodes piano flourishes, keytars, a homemade instrument (a Theremin- inspired guitar) and other random gadgets. The other is a finely tuned live act, with a highly infectious and equally energetic show, that's accented by the occasional acrobatics, experimental jams, knob twiddling and bouts of instrumental switcheroo that emboldens the player's chops. That's good, because music fans are always looking for something new to excite and intrigue them, and that is executed well. Mute Math definitely deserves a look- they nail it on record, and they kill it live. These are the elements that help Mute Math click with the fans of old and new, on a daily basis.\u000AShiny Toy Guns features Carah Faye Charnow, Gregoir Chad Petree, Jeremy Dawson and Mike Martin.

Exploratory Mining in Cube Space

Where: SAP Labs, LLC

Date: 2007-05-09 18:30:00

Type:

Data Mining has evolved as a new discipline at the intersection of several existing areas, including Database Systems, Machine Learning, Optimization, and Statistics. An important question is whether the field has matured to the point where it has originated substantial new problems and techniques that distinguish it from its parent disciplines. In this talk, we will discuss a class of new problems and techniques that show great promise for exploratory mining, while synthesizing and generalizing ideas from the parent disciplines. While the class of problems we discuss is broad, there is a common underlying objective-to look beyond a single data mining step (e.g., data summarization or model construction) and address the combined process of data selection and transformation, parameter and algorithm selection, and model construction. The fundamental difficulty lies in the large space of alternative choices at each step, and good solutions must provide a natural framework for managing this complexity. We regard this as a grand challenge for Data Mining, and see the ideas in this talk as promising initial steps towards a rigorous exploratory framework that supports the entire process. This is joint work with several people, in particular, Beechung Chen. About the Speaker` Raghu Ramakrishnan is VP and Research Fellow at Yahoo! Research, where he heads the Community Systems group. He is on leave from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is Professor of Computer Sciences, and was founder and CTO of QUIQ, a company that pioneered question-answering communities such as Yahoo! Answers, and provided collaborative customer support for several companies, including Compaq and Sun. His research is in the area of database systems, with a focus on data retrieval, analysis, and mining. He has developed scalable algorithms for clustering, decision-tree construction, and itemset counting, and was among the first to investigate mining of continuously evolving, stream data. His work on query optimization and deductive databases has found its way into several commercial database systems, and his work on extending SQL to deal with queries over sequences has influenced the design of window functions in SQL:1999. His paper on the Birch clustering algorithm received the SIGMOD 10-Year Test-of-Time award, and he has written the widely-used text "Database Management Systems" (WCB/McGraw-Hill, with J. Gehrke), now in its third edition. He is Chair of ACM SIGMOD, on the Board of Directors of ACM SIGKDD and the Board of Trustees of the VLDB Endowment, and has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, associate editor of ACM Transactions on Database Systems, and the Database area editor of the Journal of Logic Programming. Dr. Ramakrishnan is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and has received several awards, including a Packard Foundation Fellowship, an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, and an ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award.

"My Winnipeg" A Film by Guy Maddin

Where: Pacific Film Archive

Date: 2008-05-03 20:30:00

Type:

Presented by the San Francisco International Film Festival Winnipeg filmmaker Guy Maddin yearns for escape, but the icebound burg holds him fast. Dozing aboard a train that endlessly loops the city limits, he only rises to sleepwalk back to his boyhood home where he reenacts scenes from his childhood. In this dreamy milieu, the Manitoban town’s history comes to life, rife with supernatural portents in old Indian legends and 20th century tales of ghosts and mediums. It is a place with a proud labor past, a sorry history in the national sport of hockey and odd intersections with the animal world as buffalo stampede a theme park and horses freeze solid in a river. It is a town where the city fathers level the past, including a notable tree, a landmark department store and Maddin’s beloved Winnipeg Arena, leading to an uncertain future. Made for Canada’s Documentary Channel, Maddin’s first foray into nonfiction filmmaking furthers the autobiographical melodramatic skein of Cowards Bend the Knee (2003) and Brand upon the Brain! (SFIFF 2007). As in those films, his mother takes a central role as muse and monster. Fact and fiction blend seamlessly in Maddin’s personal and civic mythology, arrestingly shot in black and white in styles borrowed from silent masters but made entirely the filmmaker’s own. It is no wonder that there can be no escape from this Winnipeg. As surely as his mother clutches his heart, so does this city, where Maddin finds the extraordinary in a mundane public pool and poetry in a footprint in the snow. —Pam Grady West Coast Premiere.
