Alistair Horne discusses Savage War of Peace with Lewis Klau...

Where: The Hillside Club

Date: 2007-04-30 19:30:00

Type:

Monday April 30 7:30 pm A rare and historic opportunity to see the famous British author and historian Sir Alistair Horne who has caught the world’s attention with his powerful insights into US problems in Iraq by comparing them to the French colonial war in Algeria. Organized by LitMinds At The Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in North Berkeley (at the corner of Cedar and Arch Streets) Admission: $5 at the door; no one turned away for lack of funds. for telephone information contact The Hillside Club at (510) 848-3227 or e-mail Lewis Klausner at lewis@litminds.org Distinguished British historian, Sir Alistair Horne’s 1977 landmark historic account of the French colonial war in Algeria, A Savage War of Peace has emerged as an underground classic among military officers in Iraq. Until recently, used copies of this book were selling on Amazon.com for $150 as policy makers, analysts, and the general public were trying to understand the complex problems of the Iraqi insurgency by studying the parallel problems faced by the French army in Algeria. In response to huge demand for the book New York Review of Books has brought out a new paperback edition that includes a new preface by Horne that discusses the parallels between the Algerian and Iraqi wars. Besides treating the military problems posed by each of these occupations, he has added a discussion of the problem of torture, the damage inflicted not only on individuals, but also the damage that Abu Ghraib inflicted upon the viability of a peaceful American occupation in Iraq. Please join us to learn first hand from a great contemporary historian why the lessons of a 50-year old French colonial war are relevant today in Iraq. Sir Alistair Horne is a fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, and lives in Oxfordshire. He was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur in 1993 and received a knighthood in 2003 for his work on French history. He is author of 18 books, including La Belle France, The Price of Glory, and Seven Ages of Paris. This event is organized by LitMinds.org and supported by Moe's Books and Radio Station KPFA.

Where: UC Berkeley San Francisco Bay Area

Date: 2007-04-28 12:30:00

Type:

BANG is the Bay Area Night Game, started in November of 2002 by David Alyea. The first ever BANG race was held in the Presidio in San Francisco, and 10 teams on that night solved 10 puzzles while traversing a 7 mile course in near pitch black conditions. Along the way, they climbed through equipment in children's playgrounds, deciphered perl code, visited the pet cemetary, and even stopped to bowl at the Presidio Bowling Alley. Since the first BANG race, the event has swelled to include fields of 30 or more teams. And, the puzzles have gotten harder. Still, at the core, BANG is meant to be a night-time only game played outdoors in which teams traverse by foot the entire course, carrying game supplies, flashlights, and plenty of extra clothing to stay warm into the night.

(Free and open to the public - and followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments - and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above). The Perils of Popularity Rashmi Sinha (SlideShare) ABSTRACT: Can web-based social systems with their wide reach, user-generated and user-filtered content harness the wisdom of crowds? Duncan Watts recent experiments reveal how popularity based web social systems can throw up fickle, random trends that are essentially unreplicable, and only tangentially related to quality. However, popularity as a way to filter information continues to rise in popularity - replacing hierarchical menus, overtaking tags, and even used in lieu of relevance. Rashmi will link decades of psychology research on group decision making and social influence to what is happening on the web today. What are successful models of popularity based filtering on the web? What are ways to avoid the Watts dilemma - including Google's model of sociality, tag-based social systems, and object-based social networks. She will present some principles for the design of web social systems and how there were used in the design of SlideShare and discuss how SlideShare as an evolving social system handles popularity. BIO: Rashmi Sinha is a designer, researcher and entrepreneur. She leads the team that created SlideShare (often described as "YouTube for Powerpoint"), and MindCanvas (think online surveys meet online games). Rashmi received a PhD in cognitive psychology from Brown University in 1998. After moving to UC Berkeley for a PostDoc, she fell in love with the web, and realized that many issues that technologists think about are problems of human psychology. She switched departments and worked on search interfaces & recommender systems at the Information School, UC Berkeley. Deciding that she enjoyed practical problems more, she founded Uzanto, a user experience consulting company. Her company's first venture into products - MindCanvas (Nov 2005) - reshapes traditional research techniques like card-sorting, and divide-the-dollar into game-like experiences for remote research. In Oct 2006, Uzanto released its second product - Slideshare, a website for sharing presentations. SlideShare is growing fast, letting everyone from teachers, students, conference speakers and venture capitalists share and find presentations on topics as diverse as Chinese history, children's stories and Ruby on Rails. Rashmi writes a blog at rashmisinha.com. She is involved in the HCI community, was a founding member of the Information Architecture Society, and co-chairs the monthly BayCHI talk series.

Speaker: Jim Gemmell, Microsoft Research Next Media MyLifeBits is a lifetime store of everything. It is the fulfillment of Vannevar Bush's 1945 Memex vision including full-text search, text & audio annotations, and hyperlinks. MyLifeBits is both an experiment in lifetime storage and a software research effort. As an experiment, Gordon Bell has captured a lifetime's worth of articles, books, cards, CDs, letters, memos, papers, photos, pictures, presentations, home movies, videotaped lectures, and voice recordings and stored them digitally. He is now paperless, and is beginning to capture phone calls, IM transcripts, television, and radio. In this talk, we will demonstrate the software we have developed for MyLifeBits, which leverages SQL server to support: hyperlinks, annotations, reports, saved queries, pivoting, clustering, and fast search. MyLifeBits is designed to make annotation easy, including gang annotation on right click, voice annotation, and Web browser integration. It includes tools to record Web pages, IM transcripts, radio and television. The MyLifeBits screensaver supports annotation and rating. We are beginning to explore features such as document similarity ranking and faceted classification. We have collaborated with the WWMX team to get a mapped UI, and with the SenseCam team to digest and display SenseCam output. http://www.mylifebits.com/ has more information.

Conceived as one long piece of music, Homeland moves through many worlds—from Greek tragedy to American business models—addressing the current obsession with fear, violence, and security. Technologically, this new work is Anderson's most sophisticated production to date.

Mullan 510-647-5038; patmullan@comcast.net Photos Available www.juniuscourtneybigband.com “Every month is African American History Month.” Billy Strayhorn Celebrated in Concert and Drama by Junius Courtney Big Band with Denise Perrier The nineteen-piece Junius Courtney Big Band, featuring Denise Perrier, returns to the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse (1111 Addision near San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley) to fill every square inch of its stage on Saturday evening, February 9th at 8:00 p.m. Adding to their swinging execution of a roof-raising repertoire, the band will present a celebratory production for African American History Month -- “The Billy Strayhorn Session.” Musical director George “Jazzbeaux” Spencer, bandleader Nat Courtney, and vocalist Denise Perrier portray Strayhorn, Ellington, and Lena Horne in a staged reading that illuminates the performance of select Strayhorn compositions by the full band. Usually credited as Ellington’s arranger and collaborator, Billy Strayhorn was a music master in his own right, and a politically courageous gay black man in a performance world where the limelight was directed elsewhere. Celebrate African American history at its swingingest with the notes of Strayhorn, Ellington and the Junius Courtney Big Band. Tix: $17.50 advance, $18.50 at the door. All ages welcome. Wishful Drinking (30-below day)

Where: Berkeley Repertory Theater

Date: 2008-02-15 20:00:00

Type:

Carrie Fisher is the life of the party on Berkeley Rep’s 40th birthday with Wishful Drinking, an uproarious and sobering look at her Hollywood hangover. Fisher tells a true and intoxicating story with the strong, wry wit that she poured into bestsellers like Postcards from the Edge. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in the original Star Wars when only 19 years old. Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother, Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It’s an incredible tale—from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed. Entertainment Weekly declares Drinking “drolly hysterical,” and the Los Angeles Times dubs it a “Beverly Hills yard sale of juicy anecdotes.” Don’t miss this outrageous chance to get Carried away. Free small-batch spirits tasting at 7PM and 30-Below, free post-show party for 20-somethings.

The company's tour to New York's P.S. 122 was met with critical acclaim. And foolsFURY's sensational "The Turn of the Screw" was recognized as "the Best of the SF Fringe." "Monster in the Dark" tells the horrifying and darkly humorous tale about an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flood that threatens a peculiar and bizarrely familiar society. It is a world ruled by 'the Structure,' a shadowy government that monitors its citizens from beneath black umbrellas and within hidden towers. It is a place where business literally consumes you, Faith and Anxiety are preached daily on street corners, and people jump from the sky with the same frequency as rain. Life and society are threatened by a watery natural disaster, and the people of "Monster in the Dark" are challenged to redefine themselves and others; who can be trusted, who is necessary, and what is the greatest resource needed to survive. "Monster in the Dark" is the culmination of a two-year theatrical exploration in foolsFURY's style of "sheer kinetic energy and rigorous physical vocabulary" (SF Bay Guardian). Created by foolsFURY company members under the direction of Ben Yalom and in collaboration with novelist/playwright Doug Dorst, this production, like the best of foolsFURY’s work, is both hilarious and deeply disturbing.

202 South Hall Abstract This talk explore co-designing innovations with everyday people, i.e. non-designers. Salu Ylirisku will present an example case study that was conducted with a bank's phone service in order to develop knowledge management practices and tools. In the case study a combination contextual study and video scenario workshops were utilized together with a co-design approach with the bank's phone service workers. The project created new visions into ways to develop knowledge management in the bank. The talk will also examine experiences from essentially similar projects where new product and service innovations have been explored with non-designers. Bio Salu Ylirisku (M.Sc.) is a visiting researcher at PARC, and is a Computer Science and design researcher at the University of Art and Design Helsinki / School of Design. His current doctoral studies focus on the construction of new ideas in social and material interaction. The particular perspective that he utilizes in the study is called "design framing". Ylirisku has co-authored a book Designing with Video: Focusing the User-centred Design Process, which was published last Fall (2007) by Springer. He has also published several scientific articles on the processes of user-centered innovation.

Example projects from a variety of domains illustrate contextual observations and co-creation exercises, the basic techniques for grounding insights, with particular attention to how the core value of empathy drives methodological choices. Next, the methodological challenges posed by two non-traditional types of design are discussed: 1) designing to transform organizational cultures and 2) designing services beyond the scope of a single artifact. The talk concludes with thoughts about current frontiers in Human Factors research. A Special Talk sponsored by the Berkeley Center for New Media and the UC Berkeley School of Information

MARY ANN PIETTE: Saving Power at Peak Hours FREE Event - no RSVP or Tickets Required! California needs new, responsive demand-side energy technologies, to ensure that periods of tight electricity supply on the grid don't turn into power outages. Led by Berkeley Lab’s Mary Ann Piette, the California Energy Commission (through its Public Interest Energy Research Program) has established a Demand Response Research Center that addresses two motivations for adopting demand responsiveness: reducing average electricity prices, and preventing future electricity crises. The research seeks to understand factors that influence "what works" in Demand Response. Piette’s team is investigating the two types of demand response – load response and price response – that may influence and reduce the use of peak electric power through automated controls, peak pricing, advanced communications, and other strategies. Would you be willing to consider one or some of these? Please join us to learn more about these developments.

Berkeley Executive Leadership Series

Where: Haas School of Business (UC Berkeley)

Date: 2008-05-05 07:00:00

Type:

The Berkeley Executive Leadership Program provides participants with the ideas, knowledge, and the practical tools that will help them build a better business in these times of volatility and unanticipated change. Organizations that send their people to this program will see their training investments pay tangible dividends where they count most. The program will actively engage participants in interactive, cross-disciplinary exercises, give-and-take discussions, and explorations that will prepare them to lead better than ever - starting the day they return to the office. Participation is limited and class composition is carefully monitored to encourage a one-on-one dynamic that will allow each participant to receive personalized coaching and organizational consulting. A smaller class size allows participants the time and attention to form strong networks among each other, faculty, consultants and industry experts. Participants will find a multitude of engaging executive education methodologies integrated throughout the program. This year's program has been specifically re-focused to address the multiple challenges that leaders must face in increasingly unpredictable external and internal environments. This meticulously crafted series of one-week courses delivers the kind of out-of-box thinking and highly pragmatic tools that leaders must use to succeed in our rapidly evolving world. Any 1 week of the program, $7000; discounts for additional weeks.

Myra Melford

Where: Freight & Salvage

Date: 2008-03-03 20:00:00

Type:

At the keyboard, Melford recasts the blues and boogie-woogie of her Chicago hometown, folds in elements of the music of Eastern Europe and India and blends them with the rangy, percussive avant-garde stylings she cultivated in studies with Don Pullen and Henry Threadgill. This personal musical vocabulary is further enriched by a lush lyricism and organized by an architectural sense of composition that she derived from classical training. Described by Down Beat magazine as a "sonic innovator [whose reputation] has been built on electronics, trips to the fringes of electric jazz, rock 'n' roll, danceable beats and snappy writing," composer and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has led a number of experimental/improv jazz groups including the President, Pigpen, Zony Mash, and Ponga, and has also released work as a solo artist. This jazz group features Ben Perowsky, Tim Luntzel and Jim Campilongo.

Tonight's feature is Gray, who will perform in the 6th slot. All performers are welcome to participate in this event that has produced some of our brightest performers, including: Shawn Colvin, Dana Carvey, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Patrick Landeza. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS! One unique aspect of our Open Mic is that, unlike those held in noisy bars where people show up in spite of the fact that there's live music, you will be playing to a supportive group of friends and performers who are actually listening!!! The sign-up begins at 7:30, when the doors open. However, people with advance tickets get let in first, so they have first dibs on the list. People often start lining up as early as 7, some even come before 7 to get an advance ticket before the box office closes (at 7). Tickets are $4.50 in advance, $5.50 at the door, even if you are performing. EXCEPTION: Any performer showing up with a paying, non-performing member of the audience plays for free!!! Note: you must show up together to take advantage of this offer. Solo performers get to play one song, groups get to play two songs. Management reserves the right to occasionally award a performer with an extra song, for any reason management deems appropriate. BONUS: Anyone, performers and audience alike, staying until the end of the night is entitled to a FREE TICKET to an upcoming Freight show of their choice. This is a great deal, considering the Freight's normal ticket prices. Shows that are sold out or close to being sold out are excluded from this offer.

Eastenders Repertory Company returns to the JCC with three Vanek Plays: AUDIENCE, UNVEILING, and PROTEST by former president of the Czech Republic, Vclav Havel. This trilogy centers on the authors fictional alter ego Ferdinand Vanek, who, like the playwright-turned-statesman Havel, worked in a brewery before being jailed as a political dissident. Imprisoned for four years in the mid-1970s, Havel wrote AUDIENCE and UNVEILING after his release to entertain a small gathering of fellow writers, all of whom had their work banned in their native countries. In AUDIENCE, Vanek has a bleakly absurd and comical encounter with his boss; in UNVEILING he visits a frighteningly conformist and avidly consumerist couple; and in PROTEST, Vanek confronts his friend, a successful TV writer, to convince him to sign an anti-government petition. Special Program On Monday May 5 and Wednesday May 7, AUDIENCE will be presented together with readings of works by Pavel Kahout, Pavel Landovsky and Jir Dienstbier, playwrights who all devised their own dramas about Vanevk. These readings will be followed by a moderated discussion about the role of the artist in a politically repressive regime.Event submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of JCCEB.

May 3,10, 2008 at 8pm, May 4 at 7pm. $15 requested donation. Memories and Dreams of the Twentieth Century, an evening of stories (and a couple of songs) written and performed by Michael D. Brown and directed by Andrea Gordon. A quote from one of these true stories might best describe the evening: "The personal life, deeply lived, expands into truths beyond itself." Characters such as an uncle who may or may not be a Mafia guy, the night-shift guard in a Wyoming jail, a champion race horse, Antonin Artaud, and a mysterious woman in a tale of passion and coincidence create an emotional landscape that is both dramatic and humorous. Michael D. Brown has been creating and performing original plays for more than 25 years. His best known work was with the highly acclaimed Moving Men Theater Co. of Berkeley from 1972 to 1983. Most recently his work has received staged readings at The Magic Theatre. This is his first solo performance. Andrea Gordon is a mult
