Julia Sweeney in Letting Go of God

Where: Lakeshore Theater

Date: 2007-04-13 19:00:00

Type:

The Lakeshore Theater’s artistic director Chris Ritter, together with Paul Provenza, director of the hit film The Aristocrats, is proud to present former Saturday Night Live comedian and successful actress Julia Sweeney performing her hit monologue Letting Go of God for two-nights only on April 13 and 14 at the Lakeshore Theater, 3175 N. Broadway. Sweeney, well known as playing the androgynous character “Pat” on Saturday Night Live in early 1990’s and in the subsequent feature film It’s Pat, has also found success as a playwright using her life experiences as fuel for her hilarious, yet inspiring and sentimental monologues. Her critically acclaimed 1996 one-woman Broadway show God Said, Ha!, addressing her experience of surviving cancer, also spawned a film version of the show, directed by Quentin Tarantino. In recent years, she has also been a consultant on ABC’s Desperate Housewives and HBO’s Sex and the City. In her monologue Letting Go of God, Sweeney humorously describes her conversion from Catholicism to atheism following her brother’s tragic early death. Described by Provenza as “funny, smart, thought provoking, charming and a perfect theater piece about a personal experience that goes head-to-head with the religious BS going on these days,” the critically acclaimed one-woman show will both entertain and comically inspire audiences. The Lakeshore Theater is a 338-seat intimate space located in Chicago’s trendy Lakeview neighborhood at 3175 N. Broadway. Featuring a full bar, professional lighting and sound system, connected box office and full dressing rooms, the theater is perfect accommodation for comedians, concerts and full-length productions alike. Julia Sweeney will be performing live at the Lakeshore Theater at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 13 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. Tickets are $25 and are available by calling the Lakeshore Box Office at 773-472-3492 or by visiting www.lakeshoretheater.com.

Medal of Honor with Ed Tracy

Where: Pritzker Military Library

Date: 2007-10-11 18:00:00

Type:

Five foot six was too short for the Marines in the fall of 1942, and barely tall enough a few months later; on the island of Iwo Jima, with the American forces taking heavy casualties and unable to advance beyond the beach, five foot six was a towering height. The Pritzker Military Library is proud to welcome Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams for a special interview with Ed Tracy on Thursday, October 11, 2007. This program is free and open to the public, with a question-and-answer session to follow the interview. The presentation and live webcast will begin at 6:00 p.m., and a reception for Library members will precede the event at 5:00 p.m. This event will be taped for broadcast on WYCC Channel 20. Like all of the Medal of Honor series, the story of “Woody” Williams is not one of planned, calculated bravery. His company had been decimated, with every one of its six flamethrower men lost in two days of intense fighting on Iwo Jima. But through a never-ending hail of volcanic ash, Williams saw the American flag rise over Mount Suribachi, and he seized the moment. The twenty-one year old Acting Sergeant strapped on a flamethrower and weaved through enemy fire to destroy a machine-gun pillbox. That was a remarkable feat by itself, but Williams spent the next four hours racing from position to position, wreaking havoc, stopping only to grab new flamethrowers as each ran out of fuel. At last, the enemy line was broken, and the Marines were able to advance. By the end of one of the bloodiest battles in American history, 262 of the 279 soldiers in Williams’ company had been killed or seriously wounded. After leaving active duty, Williams became a lay minister in his church and a chaplain for his fellow Medal recipients. Today, he is Chaplain Emeritus of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Now in its fourth year, Medal of Honor with Ed Tracy has featured twenty interviews with our nation’s greatest military heroes and their riveting stories of courage under fire. The Pritzker Military Library’s fall season includes upcoming appearances by Medal recipients Patrick H. Brady and Walter D. Ehlers. Seating for this event is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended. Call 312.587.0234 or email events@pritzkermilitarylibrary.net.

Heedoosh: Rock Atzmaut

Where: Subterranean

Date: 2007-04-23 19:00:00

Type:

Rock out on Israeli Independence Day with an All Ages show featuring Heedoosh, whose visceral sound is akin to shoving your soul into an electric socket. Embracing styles from hard rock grunge to sensually melodic ballads, Heedoosh sonically traverses a brooding, middle eastern fusion with Hebrew lyrics that convey both the longing for, and imminence of, redemption. Their songs are of breathtaking beauty and complexity, rooted in sacred text and combined with contemporary verses gilded with a true rock edge influenced by Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead, Coldplay and Oasis- a mix of hard rock and brit-pop with Hebrew lyrics and Jewish themes. The songs hold fast to their rock roots and their Jewish sources without compromising any integrity on either front. presented by

The Electric Six

Type:

The Detroit sextet Electric Six mixes garage, disco, punk, new wave and metal into cleverly dumb, in-your-face songs like 'Danger! High Voltage' and 'Gay Bar.' The "first ladies of Detroit's punk 'n' roll, girl-group sound," the Gore Gore Girls (named after a 1972 B-horror movie), combine the early elements of rock 'n' roll and R&B with a lo-fi edge. We Are the Fuly combines '70s glam and late '70s post-punk.
