Jim Fruchterman Benetech - President, CEO, Founder Smart Bombs to Reading Machines for the Blind Friday, May 18, 2007 2:00 PM Engineering 2 Building, room 180 Abstract: What do smart bombs and reading machines for the blind have in common? They both use the same underlying technology to do their jobs. Jim Fruchterman, engineer, high tech entrepreneur and now social entrepreneur, traces his journey from learning about pattern recognition for military uses, to building the leading Silicon Valley company making optical character recognition for reading documents, to starting a deliberately nonprofit tech company to make reading machines for the blind. Benetech is now using academic, military and commercial technology to help human rights groups, environmental groups and people with disabilities get the technology tools they desperately need. Jim is a strong advocate for encouraging the technology and business communities to realize the socially beneficial applications of their innovations, not just those that make the most money! Biography: A technology entrepreneur and engineer, Jim Fruchterman has been a rocket scientist, founded two of the foremost optical character recognition companies, and developed a successful line of reading machines for the blind. He is now a leading social entrepreneur through his deliberately nonprofit technology company, Benetech. Benetech concentrates on applying technology to human rights and literacy for people with disabilities. Fruchterman has won numerous awards for his work, including the 2006 MacArthur Fellowship and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2004 and 2006. He was named a Schwab Social Entrepreneur of 2003, which has included attending and speaking five times at the World Economic Forums in Davos, Switzerland. Fruchterman believes that technology is the ultimate leveler, allowing disadvantaged people achieve more equality in society. Hosted by Assistant Professor James Davis

The Canadian sextet Three Inches of Blood evokes a throwback to heavy metal's youthful 1980s heyday. The band's Iron Maiden-like galloping riffs and solos are speeded up to thrash metal tempos, topped with "Dungeons & Dragons" styled lyrics and titles such as 'Destroy the Orcs' and 'Ride Darkhorse, Ride.' Their latest is 'Advance and Vanquish.' Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, Horse the Band has been many people's favorite little secret since its inception in 2000. The godfathers of the sound already coined as "Nintendo-core," they've built a sizable worldwide fan base. Deconstructing hardcore and metal trademarks and soaking them with a sharp tongue and inventive keyboard leads, Horse the Band has risen to the forefront of eclectic and extreme hard rock music. The End forms a scorching set list of inspired covers to melodic, original music heavily influenced in classic and modern rock.

Reverend Payton and the Big Damn Band

Where: Moe's Alley

Date: 2008-01-20 21:00:00

Type:

The music of Revered Payton's Big Damn Band is a unique hybrid of Roots Blues styles seemingly brought back to life by Reverend Peyton, plus his brother Jayme and "Washboard" Breezy. The secret is virtuoso musicianship, a love and respect for the pre-war blues artists that paved the way, and a dedication to writing new songs to bring it forward into the 21st century. Since his humble beginnings playing on street corners for spare change, Jason Webley -- with his trademark accordion, gravel voice and vodka bottle shaker -- has gone on to build up a sizable and cooperative cult following.

This is ADAAWE.” ADAAWE is seven dynamic, diverse women creating rich organic music of the voice and drum, which comes from the heart and speaks to the soul! In the Adaawe tradition of Ghana, West Africa, women gather in the moonlight to create music and sing songs about life’s joys and sorrows. Through constant improvisation, they breathe new life into ancient music. Their spirit of celebration and strength is the inspiration behind ADAAWE. These beautiful and skilled percussionists and vocalists come from all over the world, and their music is an international fusion of African music and rhythms, R&B/pop vocals, arresting Gospel vocal harmonies, and funky original creations. ADAAWE brings audiences to their feet with high energy djembe drumming, opens their minds with poetic lyrics and hypnotizes them with the traditional women’s music of West Africa. ADAAWE’s music is a healing force propelled by the power of women’s voices and the communication of the drum. ADAAWE brings world music to the mainstream, African drums to pop culture, and meaning back to music. In this challenging time in our world’s history, intercultural understanding and celebration of diversity is more important than ever.

As critics jostle for position to fling the perfect hyphenated descriptions of his mercurial sound (world-meets-folk-meets-trippy-meets-jazzy might be a good start), Mraz has set his sights on, as he puts it, "doing what I always do. Trying to win 'em over one fan at a time."

Jenny Lewis, Blake Sennet, Pierre de Reeder and Jason Boesel are Rilo Kiley. Formed in 1998, the Los Angeles band offers up a healthy dose of thoughtful, electrically enhanced rock and pop ditties. With their 2001 release 'Take Offs and Landings,' the band found themselves opening for the Breeders, Pedro the Lion, and Superchunk. Rilo Kiley's follow-up, 'The Execution of All Things' earned many a critic's writeup in the fall of 2002. 'More Adventurous' arrived in 2004, with the quartet's current effort 'Under the Blacklight,' due later in 2008.

The Angel/Devil on Tour!!!!!!!!!!! "Above and beyond the fact that this band is electrifying, just to watch, the things they’re doing to and with the toys of their trade, their guitars and such, are amazing. They rock and roll, they crumble and then they rise again." -Stillwater Scene Welcome open heart. No better time than now. Welcome to our family. We dream in the sticks. We rehearse where the busses don’t run. We eat and sleep late in the same little spaces. We search with you. We want to travel with you. Angel and Devil. Getting comfortable with grey. No more us vs. them. The only truths we’ve found so far are rhythm, melody, energy and kindness. Push us. We’re going to push you. Music has always changed the world and it always will. Songs are rips in time - upsets to stagnation - waking dreams. Live shows are sacred times where anything can happen. 50 percent us, 50 percent you. Slow down your mind. Speed up your heart. Step inside with us. The Angel/Devil

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Garrison Starr has been performing since she was in high school. Jay Nash is a Los Angeles based inspired singer songwriter. Nash's music recalls a Los Angeles thought to be long since extinct, a romantic dream land where inspiration flowed from one artist to another with songs about late nights, friends and lovers, songs which grew organically and were created spontaneously. He's a throwback for sure, smart with a hook, and brave enough to bare the fragile truth in a song.

Tom Petty, Tom Leadon, Randall March, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, all part of a now-legendary Florida band called Mudcrutch in the early '70s, will celebrate the release of their debut album with a short run of shows. In the early '70s, Mudcrutch earned itself a loyal following in its hometown of Gainesville, Fla., through a series of festivals hosted at its base, Mudcrutch Farm. The festivals were eventually closed down by authorities, but remained a thing of local legend. The band moved to California and released one single on Shelter Records, 'Depot Street' b/w 'Wild Eyes.' The band never cracked the national music scene or made a full album and its members all went on to other ventures. But out of the ashes of Mudcrutch came the formation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2008.
