Editors

Where: Paradise

Date: 2007-09-06 20:00:00

Type:

Like the sound in groups like Bloc Party and Interpol, Editors filter much of yesteryear's true post-punk (think Joy Division) through today's reality-TV prism. Editors are riding high on the singles 'Munich,' 'Bullets' and 'Blood.' Biffy Clyro are the Scottish trio Simon Neil, James Johnston and Ben Johnston. Their sound is described as a heavy but melodic mixture of guitar, bass and drums, with all three band members contributing to vocals. They are known for complex and interwoven guitar picks, strums and melodies, that change many times within each song.

Sully Erna (Godsmack) Book Signing

Where: Borders Back Bay

Date: 2007-04-21 14:00:00

Type:

Sully Erna, of Godsmack fame, appears at Borders to sign copies of his new autobiography The Paths We Choose. We can't promise a night out with Sully, but his long-awaited new book offers you a truly authentic Sully experience. The book is called The Paths We Choose, and it's not about being a rock star or his life on the road. It's about his life growing up, and all the struggling, suffering, and sinning along the way. It's about the good times, and the time he almost gave it all up. It's about the people he loves and the ones who betrayed him, the bands he lived for and the mistakes that seemed like good ideas at the time. But most of all, it's about his never-ending passion for music.

This breathtaking, 15-hour-plus film, based on Alfred Döblin’s great modernist novel, was the crowning achievement of a prolific director who, at age 34, had already made 40 films, including The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lola. It follows the hulking, childlike ex-convict Franz Biberkopf (Günter Lamprecht) as he attempts to become “an honest soul” amid the corrosive urban landscape of Weimar-era Germany. With equal parts cynicism and humanity, Fassbinder details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggling to survive in a viciously uncommon time. Presented in 4 segments screened over 4 days. See a display of original posters from Fassbinder films—including Lili Marleen, Veronika Voss, and Fear Eats the Soul—along with quotes from some of today’s most renowned filmmakers, including Atom Egoyan, Aki Kaurismaki, Istvan Szabo, Akin Fatih, and Mike Leigh. Tickets: Each screening: $14 general admission; $10 members, students, and seniors. Pass for all screenings: $40 general admission, $35 for members, students and seniors. Co-presented by the Goethe-Institut, Boston.

ALASH - Tuvan Throat Singers

Where: Lily Pad

Date: 2008-01-18 20:00:00

Type:

ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning,” quipping that after the performance “audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” In December 2007, the president of Tuva honored Alash member Bady-Dorzhu Ondar with the title of People’s Xöömeizhi of Tuva, the highest honor in throat singing. What distinguishes this gifted young group from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound and spirit is decidedly Tuvan. The musicians were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood. As students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a traditional ensemble. At the same time they learned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments, and listened to new trends coming out of America. They are dedicated to the music of their grandparents and generations past, and inspired by Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix, finding ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music. While touring the US, Alash has collaborated with distinguished American musicians. They have jammed with members of the innovative jazz ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra, and recorded CD tracks with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (to be released in 2008).
