Keren Ann plus Jason Hart

Where: Great American Music Hall

Date: 2007-06-16 20:00:00

On the heels of critical success for her sublime debut U.S. album, Not Going Anywhere, released on Metro Blue Records, an imprint of Blue Note Records, Paris and New York-based singer-songwriter Keren Ann follows with Nolita, another intimate collection of quietly sung lyrical gems this time with more diverse, multi-textured soundscapes. Six of the 11 songs are sung in English; the rest, including the graceful yet urgent album opener "Que n'ai-je?" ("What Don't I Have?"), in French. Recorded in Paris and New York, the CD, both beautiful and mysterious, pays homage to New York, her adopted home where she spent much of last year.

The Rusalka Cycle: Songs Between the Worlds

Where: Jewish Community Center of San Francisco

Date: 2008-01-06 14:00:00

Type:

In Slavic folklore, Rusalki are the restless spirits of women who have died unjust, untimely, or unnatural deaths. They inhabit the waters, forests, and fields, luring people to them with their mesmerizing songs and wild laughter. Rusalki are also spinners who regulate fertility, the cycles of the seasons and the weather. Performed by the nine powerful vocalists of Kitka, THE RUSALKA CYCLE is a riveting dream-like journey weaving traditional Eastern European songs together with original music by Mariana Sadovska in a haunting and evocative contemporary theater piece directed by Ellen Sebastian Chang. THE RUSALKA CYCLE is a multiyear, international project that included a research expedition and tour to Ukraine. The Ukrainian journey took Kitka to remote rural villages where elder women keep alive ancient Rusalka lore. In these village expeditions, Kitka participated in the festivities and rituals of Rusalnaia Nedelia (Rusalka week), culminating their journey in the village of Havronshchyna for the ritual Provedu Rusalok (the leading of the Rusalki to their underworld homes). While in Havronshchyna, the artists also gathered songs and oral histories from the villages' inhabitants, many of whom are refugee-evacuees of nearby villages destroyed by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. THE RUSALKA CYCLE premiered in Oakland, CA in November 2005 to sold-out houses and overwhelming public acclaim. The January 2008 San Francisco revival of The Rusalka Cycle marks the release of a CD featuring the production's music, and precedes the touring of the production to national and international theater festivals. Kitka was founded in 1979 by a group of singers who shared a passion for the stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, lush harmonies, and resonant strength of Eastern European women's vocal traditions. Through performances, recordings, educational programs, commissions, and collaborations, Kitka has exposed millions to the stirring beauty of their unique repertoire. $15-$28.

These are times when forecasters struggle to anticipate an ever-stranger geopolitical reality. A movie star as Governor? No way! Planes hitting skyscrapers? The stuff of cheap novels! In this moment of unprecedented uncertainty and change, it is tempting to conclude that forecasting is as dangerous as it is futile. In fact, connecting short-term policy to long-range forecasting is surprisingly easy -- and absolutely crucial to meeting the challenges before us. All it takes is simple shift in perspective and a few common-sense heuristics. Paul Saffo is a legendary technology forecaster with over two decades of experience exploring long-term technological change and its impact on business and society. All attendees are in for a surely controversial and interesting discussion. INFORUM is a division of The Commonwealth Club by and for people in their 20s and 30s, with a mission to inspire debate around civic issues. Ralph's world features music where little guys and gals and their folks can rock and sing along without overdosing on sucrose. Former member of the indie rock band, Bad Examples, Ralph Covert decided to shift genres and create music for young children. Rather than writing typical, simplistic tunes for kids, he makes it a priority to craft music that parents can enjoy as well. Ralph’s World critical acclaim includes The New York Times, NPR, Parents Magazine, and a Grammy nomination for his "Green Gorilla" disc. His new CD, “The Rhyming Circus”, was just released on Disney Sound. All Ages.
