Steve Hofstetter

Where: Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase

Date: 2007-07-14 20:00:00

Type:

Author, columnist, and comedian Steve Hofstetter has often been called the hardest working man in show-business. With all due respect to the late James Brown. One of the top booked acts on the college circuit, the 27-year-old humorist is also a weekly humor columnist for both SportsIllustrated.com and NHL.com. After hosting Four Quotas on Sirius Satellite Radio for two seasons, Hofstetter moved to broadcast radio, and his Sports Minute (Or So) is currently syndicated on over 100 stations. Hofstetter recently released his first live comedy album, CURE FOR THE CABLE GUY, which debuted at #22 on Billboard’s comedy charts. Hofstetter’s national TV debut came on ESPN’s Quite Frankly, where Stephen A. Smith yelled at him for three minutes. Hofstetter has also appeared on Showtime’s “White Boyz in the Hood” this fall, and does what he can to represent American comedy in the groundbreaking New Line documentary “On the Road in America.” Having appeared on shows in Boston, Louisville, Miami, and many other markets, his local television appearances are too numerous to count, especially if you’re using your fingers. Hofstetter’s brutal tour schedule consists of over 100 colleges and dozens of clubs every year, and is fueled by an immense online popularity, hundreds of radio and TV appearances, and a Prius with great gas mileage. While an undergraduate at Columbia University, Hofstetter was a well-read columnist for the Columbia Daily Spectator and a voice of the Lions. After a summer writing for Maxim, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated for Kids, Hofstetter turned his column into two books. The column gained popularity with syndication in several newspapers and websites, including collegehumor.com. Showtimes: 8:00 & 10:30 pm Tickets: $11 in advance, $13 at the door

Huun Huur Tu

Where: Ark

Date: 2007-11-17 20:00:00

Type:

Huun-Huur-Tu, a veteran of concert and festival performances in nearly every country of Europe, has emerged as the foremost international representative of Tuva's remarkable musical culture. Tuvans not only transform the sounds of the natural world into music through imitation; they also make sonic "maps" of physical landscapes which may be expressed in texted songs, throat-singing, whistling, or other types of vocal production. For the Tuvans, one of the purposes of music seems to be to offer detailed and concrete descriptions of topography. In short, Tuvan music is not abstract, like most Western music, but radically representational, by imitating or aesthetically representing the sounds of nature.

Dr. Wenyi Wang, MD. & Ph.D. On April 20, 2006, Dr. Wang became a subject of CNN headlines and international media interest when she cried out to President Bush and Chinese leader Hu Jintao during a White House reception; her courage to call the world’s attention to China’s organ harvesting was widely admired. http://wenyiwang.org/ Mr. David Kilgour, former Member of Parliament and Secretary of State for Asia Pacific of Canada, Mr. Kilgour, with colleague Mr. David Matas, carried out an independent investigation in 2006 and concluded: “We believe that there has been and continues today to be large-scale organ seizures from unwilling Falun Gong practitioners” http://investigation.go.saveinter.net/ Dr. Charles Lee, MD, is the only U.S. citizen to be sentenced a jail term in China for practicing Falun Gong. John Heffron*Special Engagement*

Where: Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase

Date: 2008-05-08 20:00:00

Type:

Winner of NBC's hit reality series "Last Comic Standing," comedian John Heffron has become the comic to watch and love. The Detroit funnyman, who Phyllis Diller referred to as "the cute one," has won a talent contract with NBC as well as other great opportunities. When asked about his experience on the show, John said "It's a lot like high school… there are good and bad memories, in the end, I think I will only remember the good ones." The recently married 35-year-old comic is already seeing the payoffs. He has been traveling and touring for more than 2 years, performing in comedy clubs, colleges and theatres across the country. John grew up in nearby South Lyon and started his comedy career as a student at Eastern Michigan University, skipping night classes to perform stand-up comedy. He got his first gig as an emcee right here at the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase. Since then he’s invented a card game (The That Guy Game) been seen on all the late night talk shows, cut a deal for his own TV show, and more than I could ever list here on this page.
