The Platters formed in Los Angeles in 1953 and became a top-ten sensation in 1955 with the hit “Only You (and you alone)”, which stayed atop the R&B charts for 7 weeks. The follow-up, The Great Pretender became their first number one hit. In 1956, The Platters appeared in the first major motion picture based around rock and roll, Rock Around the Clock, and performed both "Only You" and "The Great Pretender". The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in its inaugural year of 1998. For over 40 years, the legendary Monroe Powell has been a recording and touring lead vocalist with internationally acclaimed groups. Originally hired by Platters founder and manager Buck Ram in 1970, Powell has created a legacy of his own. Powell replaced former lead singer Sonny Turner, becoming the third lead singer in Platters history. Orchestra, balcony and theater seating is available for this event.
