Saosin - $15 with Norma Jean, Alexisonfire, Envy On The Coast Doors open at 6:30pm California-based Saosin burst onto the post-hardcore scene in March 2003 with their explosive screamo-tinged debut EP, Translating the Name, on Death Do Us Part. For the recording, the band was comprised of vocalist Anthony Green, former Slayer guitar tech and drummer Pat McGrath, guitarist/vocalist Justin Shekoski (ex-As Hope Dies), and former Open Hand members bassist Zach Kennedy and guitarist/vocalist Beau Burchell. The band's name comes from a Chinese proverb that means "small heart," as in love cautiously. Shortly after the EP's completion, Kennedy exited (going on to join Ashlee Simpson's band) to be replaced by Chris Sorenson, and since McGrath had been enlisted solely to play drums on the album, Saosin weren't solidified until that July with the addition of permanent drummer Alex Rodriguez (also formerly of Open Hand). Even though Translating had been out since March, the band didn't make its on-stage debut until June. Their powerful live performance and heavy Internet presence were coupled with high praise for their EP (comparing them to the emotional catharsis of Glassjaw), cultivating an impressive underground following. www.saosin.com

An Evening with Perpetual Groove - $12 Doors open at 7:00pm A celebrated, international touring act for over four years, Perpetual Groove has built a reputation on intense, emotional music that fans call “trance arena rock,” and won over legions of fans with their experimentations in live 5.1 concert surround sound, an intense retina blinding light show, and a willingness to keep the connection strong between band and fans. The Athens, GA-based band’s riveting live performances have catapulted them into the “must-see” category of live rock bands. With a funky blend of jazz-rock, neo-psychedelia, R&B, trance electronica, progressive rock and anthemic arena rock, the Bonnaroo veterans have conquered the festival circuit and continue to tour relentlessly. Perpetual Groove has become a rock band. That’s the impression fans got when they heard one of the rock & roll tracks from Perpetual Groove’s new album, LIVELOVEDIE at the band’s sold out New Year’s Eve performance. LIVELOVEDIE was produced by Grammy winner Robert Hannon (Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) and Perpetual Groove. Shooter Jennings - $15 in advance, $18 day of show Doors open at 7:30pm The only child of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, "Shooter" Jennings (who officially shares his father's first name) lived his first few years in a crib on his parents' tour bus. By age 5, he was playing drums. Between tours, back in Nashville, he took piano lessons, didn't like them, stopped, then started teaching himself and enjoying it more. He picked up his guitar at 14 and hasn't put it down since. He and his father recorded a few things together when they happened to have some microphones set up and the tape recorder plugged in. Then at 16, he discovered rock 'n' roll. Driven by a sound he heard coming together in his head -- something like Lynyrd Skynyrd mutating into Guns N' Roses -- Jennings left Nashville a couple of years later to seek his fortunes in L.A. There, he assembled a band and named it Stargunn. But the Hollywood party scene eventually began to bother him. He says, "I was posing as a rocker -- a country guy trying to be something he wasn't." In 2003, he dissolved Stargunn and moved to New York City to spend time with his girlfriend and sort out what he wanted to do next. An unexpected gig at the House of Blues a few weeks later revived his creativity. After six weeks in the studio, he completed his first solo album, "Put the O Back in Country," in early 2005. Jennings portrayed his father in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line. In 2006, he issued the studio album, Electric Rodeo, as well as Live From Irving Plaza. www.shooterjennings.com

Robbie Fulks Duo - $10 / 8:00 pm Robbie Fulks was one of the more heralded talents in the alternative country movement, displaying an offbeat, sometimes dark sense of humor in many of his best moments. As time passed, he moved away from the country twang of his early work and into a crunchier roots-rock hybrid. Born in York, Pa., on March 25, 1963, Fulks divided his childhood between Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina and received his schooling at Columbia University. With failing grades and a child on the way, he moved to Chicago in 1983 and first served as vocalist and guitarist in bluegrass band the Special Consensus, appearing on their Grammy-nominated 1989 album A Hole in My Heart. He later performed in the musical revue Woody Guthrie's American Song and formed his own rock band, the Trailer Trash Revue. http://robbiefulks.com/

The Hipnecks - $5 with Joe Stickley's Blue Print Doors open at 8:30pm Combining elements of Midwest rock, Blues, Texas Rock, Jazz, Funk, and even Bluegrass, the five members of The HipNecks have conjured a sound all their own," says The Vox, Magazine. That sound has been called a "jambalaya" by press and "country fried jam" by fans alike. Take it from the name, The HipNecks, which combines the words "Hippies" and "Rednecks" as affectionally as it unites trucker hats and flip-flops. Incorporating catchy vocal harmonies, acoustic rhythm guitars, acoustic and electric lead guitars, harmonica, mandolin, bass guitar, drums, hand percussion, piano, organ, and sax; their music must speak for itself. As musical genres and the groups they encompass become increasingly segregated, The HipNecks' crossover approach has become radically diverse. They like a wide variety of genres, and they all write music. It shows. Although they are all in their twenties, they incorporate aspects of music well before our time with what you hear everywhere today. Over the past several years, this "jambalaya" has simmered into a cohesive style that's American like only a mutt can be and has been well received by all ages. www.thehipnecks.com www.jsblueprint.com

Blevins?, The Pale Family, The Cotton Mollies, Velociraptors Can Open Doors - $5 / 8:30 pm Yeah, back in those days this was little more than a one horse town (and the was, of course, so old it was standing on its last leg), barely more than a small congregation of farm houses. Then came the gold rush. Thousands upon thousands came in search of personal wealth. And with the crowds came a need for entertainment; gambling joints and whore houses, Turkish bath houses and oriental massage parlors. With the people came squalor, and from the squalor rose a sound of resentment laced with hope. That sound was Blevins? Ever mindful of their origins, Blevins? began playing a folk that representative of suffering of the working class, and fulfilling their need for relief. The resulting sound was a delightful mixture of Folk, Inde, and Punk. http://www.myspace.com/blevinsrocks http://www.myspace.com/thepalefamily http://www.myspace.com/thecottonmollies

We Always Swing Jazz Series Presents: The Yellowjackets - Adults: $21, $26, $30/ Students: $16, $21 Doors open at 7:00pm A little more than 25 years ago a group of musicians led by guitarist Robben Ford dedicated themselves to pushing the boundaries of jazz with a deceptively intense, distinctive sound whose music incorporated elements of bebop, funk, R&B and rock. They called themselves the Yellowjackets. Not surprisingly a band with such a long history has gone through some personnel changes – and The Yellowjackets, who makes its first "We Always Swing" Jazz Series appearance this season, are no exception. However, what is exceptional about this band is the consistency of sound and energy that the quartet – regardless of personnel – has and continues to deliver. A favorite the world over, The Yellowjackets includes noteworthy saxophonist and arranger Bob Mintzer, original members Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip and "newcomer," drummer Marcus Baylor, who joined the band seven years ago – which makes him not so "new" any more. Suffice to say the most recent Yellowjackets edition is tight having now played hundreds and hundreds of gigs together. Taken as a whole, the group's numerous recordings cumulatively reflect the ensemble's ability to cut a wide swath of styles under the jazz umbrella. Sessions – both live and in the studio — incorporate everything from straight-ahead acoustic music, to the electric and effects-oriented jams. www.wealwaysswing.org

The Broken West - $6 / 8:30 pm The Broken West are a talented group of young musicians united in their love of “the song.” Whether it be in the studio or on stage, where their raucously energetic live show is a site to behold, their enthusiasm and optimism are infectious, as it should be. The Broken West formed in Los Angeles in the summer of 2004, a group of friends from all across the country, coming together based on their mutual love of music. Originally known as The Brokedown, the band changed their name in the fall of 2006 in response to concerns from another band out of Chicago with a similar name. Names may change, but great music still remains. So far in their young rock and roll life The Broken West have already released a critically acclaimed EP – The Dutchman’s Gold – and criss-crossed the country several times, we're assuming in a beat-up van. In January 2007, Merge will release their debut full length, I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On, wherein the lads craft their roughly elegant pop with infectious confidence that belies their relatively short career to date. http://www.myspace.com/thebrokenwest

Tragically, Simmons died just two months after the band started, but Particle found his replacement in Charlie Hitchcock. Gaining fans from the pure energy of their live show, Particle released their debut album, Launchpad, in 2004. The next year Hitchcock left the band, and Scott Metzger and Ben Combe took his place on guitar, also bringing in vocals -- a new addition for the group. Family Groove Company, East Ash Street Band - $5 / 8:30 pm Wed. December 5 Family Groove Company is a four piece band from Chicago that is turning heads and catching ears with a sound that is uncannily fresh, and live performances that simply envelop audiences in the fun, excitement and passion that the band radiates from the stage. Growing audiences everywhere FGC plays attest to the impact the band is beginning to make, as they bring the excitement of their live performances to ever growing venues, in more and more cities across the country. Appearances at most of the Midwest's major music festivals (Summer Camp, 10,000 Lakes, Summerfest) have helped along the way, headlining appearances at other festivals (Farmapalooza, Feel Good) point to the great things to come, and the over 25,000 live CDs that have been distributed all over the country speak for themselves. Family Groove Company is a band that music fans should not miss. FGC integrates the groove sensibility developed by funk/jazz crossover artists like Herbie Hancock and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, with thoughtful, tight song writing that takes cues from the likes of Steely Dan and the Beatles. The result? An infectious, fresh sound the band calls "groove informed jazz/rock." In April 2006, FGC released their second studio album, The Charmer, and delivered on this sonic vision with uncommon clarity and excitement. Jazz harmonic ideas encounter thick grooves, and improvisation negotiates tight song writing, as each track brings shape and contour to the band's sound. A fierce attentiveness to composition complements FGC's passion for improvisation, and the band offers a sound that captivates audiences ranging from the most casual music fan to the most critical musician. http://www.familygrooveco.com/ http://www.myspace.com/eastashstband

Barack Obama Benefit featuring Witch's Hat - $5 / 8:30 pm Sat. December 8 If four dudes who grew up on vintage metal like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest resided in NYC during the dance-punk explosion, they'd either throw full beers at the Rapture every time they took the stage, or they'd start a band that sounds like Witch's Hat. That's right — somehow a band has found a way to combine big guitars, a crafty rhythm section, half-shouted vocals and lyrics about octopuses, dragon slayers, vampires and aliens into a great record. So how do they combine the fist-pumping machismo of metal with the too-cool-for-school hip of dance punk? Well, they don't. Witch's Hat casts off both those genres' prerequisites, instead creating a vibe that is both irony- and posturing-free. Sure, the fantasy lyrics can't be serious, but they seem to come more from the realm of goofy good times than from masculine assertion or tongue-in-cheek pretentiousness, and the music seems to work the same way. The funky bass lines aren't a demonstration of virtuosity, just a push onto the dance floor, while the bravado behind lyrics about robots aren't a display of testosterone, just a way to keep rocking — the only goal that Witch's Hat seems to have. -The Cleveland Free Times http://www.myspace.com/witchshat

Frank Bang's Secret Stash - $6 with SRE Doors open at 8:00pm Frank Bang is devoted to the music of his youth. His heart is pure rock and roll, but his soul screams the blues. Like Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield before him, it was the combination of raw talent, hard work and devotion that earned him respect, and a following, among blues loyalists. Blues guitar master Buddy Guy chose Frank to play blues guitar alongside him on his national and world tours. When you hear him play you will understand why. For Frank, being on the road with Buddy Guy has been an advanced education in the blues, especially in the fields of guitar mastery and showmanship. The experience has not only honed his ability with traditional material to that of a true journeyman, it has strengthened his contemporary rock guitar presence as well. On the road, he has jammed with some of Rock and Roll's great legends including Carlos Santana, Robert Plant, Jimmy Vaughan, John Mayer, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Richie Sambori and Zakk Wylde, to name a few. He has performed on the Tonight Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and numerous European and American television specials, including a documentary on BRAVO and Jules Holland “Live”, for the BBC. Big Smith - $10 Doors open at 8:00pm Hailing from Springfield, MO, Big Smith blends bluegrass, gospel, and acoustic country sounds with Southern-accented rock & roll into a good-naturedly eclectic mixture that has won the band a loyal audience in the South and Midwest, thanks to frequent touring and an energetic live show. Formed in 1996, Big Smith is a family affair -- the group includes two sets of brothers, Mark Bilyeu (guitar) and Jody Bilyeu (mandolin and keyboards), as well as Jay Williamson (percussion) and Mike Williamson (bass), all of whom happen to cousins, as is soundman and fifth member Rik Thomas. Inspired by the Appalachian gospel and dance music they grew up with, the members of Big Smith started as an acoustic "hillbilly" quartet; with time, electric guitars, keyboards, and occasional horns began to make their way into the band's repertoire, and Thomas joined the Bilyeu and Williamson brothers to help handle the band's increasingly elaborate touring schedule and occasionally join the on-stage jams. Through the band's own MayApple Records label, the group managed to release four albums in its first seven years together -- two studio sets, Big Smith and Big Rock, and two very different live recordings, a collection of vintage Appalachian gospel songs called Big Smith Family and Friends Live at Lonestar and a raucous two-disc document of a more typical live show, Gig. www.bigsmithband.com

New Year's Eve Bash with The Record Collector and Videology's Rhythm and Soul Revue - $20 Doors open at 8:30pm Well, it's BIG! Hell, it has eleven people! You have a weirdo front man with pipes of gold egging everyone onstage to one up each other. In an obvious turn then the eleven show-offs onstage start trying to egg on the audience to dance like fools. We call it a rhythm and soul revue for a reason. As I Lay Dying - $16 with August Burns Red, Evergreen Terrace, Still Remains Doors open at 6:30pm The members of AS I LAY DYING are the kind of musicians that refuse to be measured solely by their most recent accomplishments. The new album, An Ocean Between Us, is evidence of this fact, proving once again that these guys are not afraid to push the limits of their sound and always keep things moving. The music grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the album’s finish. Building upon the foundation that AILD has laid over the past several years, growing from a small San Diego outfit slowly and deliberately into a priority national act, the band has become Metal Blade Records’ biggest sellers with an extremely devoted following. AS I LAY DYING has the goods to take it all the way and stake their claim as the metal band “ you need to know about” in 2007 and beyond. A brief history lesson: AILD’s Metal Blade debut, 2003’s Frail Words Collapse, effectively introduced this indie band to the world on the strength of the catchy but brutal songs, “94 Hours” and “Forever.” The album went on to be a label best-seller, surpassing 210,000 units sold. The follow up, Shadows Are Security, further spotlighted AILD as one of most influential bands to break out of the underground metal scene. Their high-profile, marathon tour cycle found the band as one of the featured attractions on the Ozzfest 2005 side stage, then as part of the second annual Taste Of Chaos trek in winter 2006 along with Deftones and Thrice, culminating in the headlining slot on the 2006 Sounds Of The Underground tour in front of 3000-5000 people per night. Shadows has sold nearly 275,000 records to date as word of the album and the band’s electrifying live show continues to spread through their ever growing fan base, fans that simply put are in it for the long haul. http://www.myspace.com/asilaydying http://www.myspace.com/augustburnsred http://www.myspace.com/evergreenterrace http://www.myspace.com/stillremains

Ja Rule - $20 in advance, $22 day of show with Fa Sho Entertainment Camp Doors open at 7:30pm As the flagship artist for producer Irv Gotti's Def Jam-affiliated Murder Inc. label, Ja Rule became the rap industry's most commercially successful artist during the early 2000s, working closely with the hitmaker and his stable of talent. Ja initially won over a sizable following with Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), his rather hardcore debut album modeled largely after the style of rugged thug rap then popularized by DMX and the Ruff Ryder collective. In particular, "Holla Holla" became a breakout hit, but in retrospect it was a minor success relative to what Ja accomplished a year later with his follow-up album, Rule 3:36 (2000). On this album, Gotti juxtaposed the rapper's thuggish style with a trio of radio-friendly vixens -- Christina Milian, Lil' Mo, and Vita -- and produced three enormous hit singles: "Between Me and You," "I Cry," and "Put It on Me." These duets established the template for Ja's following album, Pain Is Love (2001), which featured yet more chorus-singing divas, this time Jennifer Lopez ("I'm Real") and Ashanti ("Always on Time"), as well as a similarly styled interpolation of Stevie Wonder's "Do I Do" ("Livin' It Up") featuring Case on the hook. By 2002, Ja alone had brought Gotti's Murder Inc. label into the national spotlight and helped break successive artists from the label, most notably Ashanti, who collaborated with him on "Down 4 U," yet another chart-topping hit. Roughly around this same time, Ja used his fame to launch a minor acting career for himself, beginning with The Fast and the Furious (2001), and he began to attract attention from his peers, uniting with Nas on the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards and squabbling with DMX in the press. Later that year he released The Last Temptation (2003), which again paired him with urban vocalists for a few singles, this time with Bobby Brown ("Thug Lovin'") and Ashanti ("Mesmerize"). A backlash mounted around this time, as upstart rapper 50 Cent began hurling numerous disses at Ja. Increasingly susceptible to the criticism, he returned with as much vengeance as he could muster on 2003's Blood in My Eye and the following year's R.U.L.E. Exodus, a best-of with a couple new tracks, was released in late 2005. In 2007 he announced on his website that his new album, The Mirror, would appear before the end of the year. www.jarule.com http://www.myspace.com/fashoentertain
