Globalization has increased demands for business transparency, the rule of law and universal standards and norms. In addition, some advocate expansion of managerial goals beyond shareholder profits to include social responsibility to multiple stakeholders including employees, environment, local economy and neighbors. Moreover, governments and NGOs press for more regulation, including financial securities, privacy and information protection, homeland security and export restrictions, money laundering and corrupt practices, IP protection, quotas and tariffs, environmental and human rights, wage and union rules, and occupational safety.) This month's panel will grapple with the following questions: 1) How should a corporation conduct its operations when laws, standards and values of the home country conflict with those abroad? 2) Should corporations work for improvement of civic society in each country, or stick to bottom line concerns? 3) How is Social Responsibility manifesting in the managerial role; what are examples of dealing with "externalities"? 4) Where are laws and norms converging towards universal standards and where are they diverging? Why? 5) How does the increase in governmental regulation affect corporations? 6) How does the increasing role of Non-Governmental Organizations affect corporations? 7) Where can managers find the resources to help work through these complex issues? When I Came Home follows Herold’s battle with homelessness and PTSD as he tries to get help from the VA, city agencies, and various veterans organizations. With temperatures dropping in New York, Herold meets fellow vet Paul Rieckhoff, founder of the country’s largest Iraq veteran advocacy organization. Wiki Wednesday is a party with a featured speaker or discussion topic, related to wikis. We get together to chat, learn about wikis, find jobs, talk deals, and hang out. People who participated in the all-day Wikithon (a wiki hackathon) can show off their cool hacks. Anyone else is welcome to give a brief demo or lightning talk. Socialtext and co-hosts will provide the space and food for the party. Our featured speaker in September will be Betsy Megas, aka Dvortygirl, an experienced administrator and editor from Wikitionary. She'll talk about the issues and challenges that come with creating a multilingual dictionary. Translators and bilingual or multilingual people, as well as people interested in internationalization, localization, and wikis, would probably have a great time with this talk and the following discussion! The topic will be "Wiktionary for the non-Wiktionarian", with a smattering of the history and culture that has evolved around Wiktionary, along with some of the challenges involved with creating a dictionary in this manner, with a bit about how we have grown and where we still need to go.

In true SFCO style, classic compositions will juxtapose new works. Eleanor Alberga, Valerie Coleman, and Wayne Wallace are accomplished 21st century performers and composers whose wonderful music reflects their diverse backgrounds. The sounds of 18th century Paris are brought to the present day in the music of Chevalier de St. Georges. Two world premieres, two top-notch soloists, and a cameo appearance by the real Mozart make this a wide-ranging and fascinating free program that you can't afford to miss. In honor of the theme, music of the African Diaspora, SFCO commissioned two world premieres - Valerie Colemans Concertino for Piano and Chamber Orchestra, performed with special guest pianist William Chapman Nyaho from Ghana, and Cuban Variations by Wayne Wallace, a renowned jazz trombonist and San Francisco native. Cuban Variations is Wallace's first work for a classical ensemble. "Crossroads..." will also feature a performance by violin prodigy Karla Donehew, a resident of Albany and student at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Donehew will perform the Violin Concerto in A Major by Chevalier de St. Georges, nicknamed the Black Mozart, who was one of the most important musical figures in 18th century Paris. But this event isn't just for those directly involved in mashups... This event should be a little bit different than the standard Startup-U. This is for all you entrepreneurs that want to partner with others or build your own tools for others to use in their mashups. It might be a little bit more technical than your average Startup-U, but this will be a good introduction for those who have heard the word bandied about but are unsure how they can get involved, or how it can benefit them and make their lives easier - and their own products better! The team at Serena software are all jockeying for a position at this event, and there are some other exciting mashers that are expected to confirm their participation soon. If you are involved in a mashup already, send me an email (Charles Anderson: canderson@casecentral.com) and we might feature you at the event! AGENDA: 11:45-12:00 Registration, Networking and Food 12:00-12:15 SVASE/Startup-U Overview, Introductions, Speaker Intros 12:15-1:15 Interactive Mashup-U Program 1:15-1:30 Networking with the presenters! With your help, we will start on time so the speaker can provide you with as much interactive information as possible. Please arrive by 11:45am to register. We will start the program promptly at 12:00! Popular FAQs regarding Startup-U: What is the cost of this event? A $5 (member) or $15 (affiliate/non-member) registration fee, plus a $1.50 credit card processing fee, includes event and lunch, available through advanced online registration. A $10 or $20 fee is collected at the door. What is the typical format of a Startup-U event? Generally speaking, each event begins with an introduction by the host followed by a brief talk about SVASE and self-introductions by each of the attendees. After the introductions, the host introduces a speaker (usually 20 minute presentation, followed by group discussion) or the discussion topic. The exact format varies based on the host; variety is what makes this event so exciting! Note: this will not be a typical event as it focuses on one specific technical trend. Who should attend? Startup entrepreneurs, anyone thinking about forming a startup, service providers, angels and VCs active in the Silicon Valley information tech and biotech entrepreneur communities. Past participants include: * Current and aspiring entrepreneurs * Venture Capitalists, Angels and other members of the funding community * Service Providers (e.g. human resources, contract programming, etc.) * Independent Consultants (e.g. sales, marketing, engineering, etc.) Do I need to be a member of SVASE to attend this event? Non-members and guests of members are welcome to attend any 2 SVASE Startup-U events. Afterwards, we recommend that non-members become members of SVASE. For more information on the benefits of joining SVASE, please visit our website at www.svase.org/site/Membership/index_html.You can also join at the event itself. What if I have more questions? Accelerating Learning and Innovation, Eliminating Waste Speaker, Frode L. Odegard, Founder and CEO of Lean Software Institute, will present new perspectives on software product development and take-aways on how to restructure it to make the development process more effective and efficient. Program Description - Begins promptly at 7 PM Executives are often excited about Lean Product Development because of the bottom-line results this approach has been shown to deliver (up to 4 x R&D productivity, 70% schedule reduction, etc.) While improvements in speed, customer satisfaction, and cost savings are well-documented, the real power of Lean Product Development stems from the way leaders are able to mobilize people for faster learning and innovation. In this session we will discuss powerful Lean practices that help executives focus their people more on results-oriented innovation and less on just following a process. We will then show how this knowledge-driven approach results in better products and processes. $15 non SDForum members; $0 SDForum members; no pre-registration necessary.

Thursday, April 17th at 7:00 PM Meet bestselling author Anne Perry when she reads and discusses her latest Thomas Pitt novel, Buckingham Palace Gardens, featuring an inside view of Buckingham Palace in the aftermath of a bloody murder. Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries are perhaps the best loved of all her Victorian bestsellers, luring us into the multi-layered richness of London, from the great mansions and secluded drawing rooms to the city's festering slums. Now, in her most mesmerizing novel yet, she invites us to a house-party at Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales has asked four wealthy entrepreneurs and their wives to the palace to discuss a fantastic idea: the construction of a six-thousand-mile railroad that would stretch the full length of Africa. But, alas, the prince's gathering proves disastrous when the mutilated body of a prostitute hired for a late-night frolic (after the wives have retired to bed) turns up among the queen's monogrammed sheets in a palace linen closet. With great haste, Thomas Pitt, brilliant mainstay of Special Services, is summoned to resolve the crisis. The Pitts' cockney maid, Gracie, is also recruited-to pose as a palace servant and listen in on the guests' conversations, scan their bedrooms, and scrutinize their troubled faces for clues to hidden rivalries and attachments that could have lead to murder. If Pitt and Gracie fail to find out who brutally murdered the young woman-as seems increasingly likely-Pitt's career will be over, and the scandal may just cause the monarchy to fall. With a cast of wonderful characters, among them the gentle Princess of Wales, and a twisting plot that takes us into the hidden world of the royal family, Anne Perry probes deeply the hearts of men and women ensnared by their own emotions. Never has this distinguished novelist told a story with more truth and passion. Bio: Anne Perry is the bestselling author of the World War I novels No Graves As Yet, Shoulder the Sky, Angels in the Gloom, and At Some Disputed Barricade; as well as four holiday novels: A Christmas Journey, A Christmas Visitor, A Christmas Guest, and A Christmas Secret. She is also the creator of two acclaimed series set in Victorian England. Her William Monk novels include Dark Assassin, The Shifting Tide, and Death of a Stranger. The popular novels featuring Thomas and Charlotte Pitt include Long Spoon Lane, Seven Dials, and Southampton Row. Her short story "Heroes" won an Edgar Award. Anne Perry lives in Scotland.

VCs have become more creative, often acting as seed investors in exchange for equity. "There's a lot of money chasing a lot of deals," said Venrock's David Siminoff. Come hear from under radar founders making big waves in this new landscape. They are excited about the future of technology and building companies. This lively panel of hot, up and coming entrepreneurs and founders will share their stories and insights as well as answer your questions about building a successful company.
