Besides recalling the EUs achievements, the document identifies the EUs future goals as well as the challenges it faces: safeguarding the European way of life and assuming global responsibility. The dream of peace and prosperity could come true because - after devastation and destruction the Europeans had let themselves be guided by the quality that is their most important attribute: tolerance. On the occasion of the German presidency of the European Union, Karsten D. Voigt will comment on the past, the future and Germanys vision of the European Union. Since 1999, Karsten D. Voigt has served as Germanys Coordinator for German-American Cooperation, working to strengthen transatlantic relations by advancing collaborative initiatives between Germany, America and Canada. Mr. Voigts activities integrate the support of the political, academic, scientific and cultural communities on both sides of the Atlantic in pursuit of enlarging the avenues of communication, and deepening socio-cultural understanding. He holds membership on the boards of several prestigious organizations, among them the German Society for Foreign Affairs, Atlantik Brcke e.V., Aspen Institute, Berlin, the German-Russian Forum and RAND Europe. Born in Elmshorn, Germany, Mr. Voigt studied history, German philology and Scandinavistic at the universities of Hamburg, Copenhagen and Frankfurt. The Thief Lord Film Sunday January 27th 2008, 10:00am Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, 5750 Wilshire Blvd Suite 100, Los Angeles CA 90036 Info +1 323 5253388 D/UK/LUX 2006, Directed by Richard Claus, starring Aaron Johnson (III),Jasper Harris, Rollo Weeks.., 98 min. Adapted from the book "Der Herr der Diebe" by Cornelia Funke. Bo and Prosper, two orphaned children are on the run, hiding among the crumbling canals and misty alleyways of Venice. Befriended by a gang of street children and their mysterious leader, the Thief Lord, they shelter in an old, abandoned theater. On their trail is a bungling detective, obsessed with disguises and the health of his pet tortoises. But a greater threat to the boys' new-found freedom is something from a forgotten past - a beautiful magical carousel with the power to spin time itself. The monthly Kinder Matinee provides a forum for our many little friends and German learners: in addition to a feature film we will showcase childrens materials from our Media Lounge. The occasional puppet theater and an annual bookfair compliment the program. The children can play, draw, meet and mingle and parents have opportunity to meet like-minded families. Library card holders may borrow and return materials during the Matinee which may be kept until the following matinee. Suggested Donation: $ 5.- per family. Please note that all childrens films are in German without subtitles unless otherwise noted. Parking in the building is free during the Matinee.
