e.s.t. - Esbjorn Svensson Trio

Where: World Cafe Live

Date: 2007-04-15 19:00:00

Type:

e.s.t. is a phenomenon: a jazz trio, which sees itself as a pop band that plays jazz, which broke with the tradition of leader and sidemen in favour of equality within it's members, which not only plays jazz venues but also venues usually reserved for rock bands and gets a whole audience to sing-a-long with jazz-standards as eg. Thelonius Monks Bemsha Swing. Their music can be found in the pop-charts and their videos are playing on MTV Scandinavia. With their unique soundscape, combining jazz with drum n bass, electronic elements, funk rhythm, and pop and rock as well as European classical music, e.s.t. won over an audience spanning from the classic jazz-fans to the youngest hip-hop fans. Critics and audiences worldwide agree: e.s.t. are definitely one of the most innovative jazz bands of today.Event submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of worldcafelive.

Alongside her two male partners she burst onto the scene like a quiet storm, blowing away expectations and defining a new stance for ladies who followed on the mike. "Mecca The Ladybug makes great strides in proving women in rap don't need to scream and swagger in order to be tough and assertive," wrote Larry Flick in Billboard magazine. "Mecca never raises her voice but always is a commanding figure."

The Brooklyn/NYC based sextet boasts two drummers, intensely powerful bass rhythm, soaring horns and a wild throated open-heart on vocals. Their live performances are bloodily moving: by turns Ellington, Post punk Led Zeppelin, and vaudeville orchestra. The band´s sound crashes from violent to fragile in staggered stride, rips the heart out of the room only to offer it to the wallflower. If Trenchtown lay on the Bay of Bengal, was frequented by shipmates of Rimbaud and Conrad trafficking in amplifiers and amphetamines, Nervous Cabaret would serve as the house band in the last bar in the weirdest most lawless gin alley.
