Featured Presentations will be: The Pentagon Papers Then and Now: UUs Confronting Government Secrecy This presentation and panel discussion on the historical significance of the Pentagon Papers and the denomination's role in publishing them 35 years ago features experts who can relate this history to secrecy and deception in government today. Invited speakers: Daniel Ellsberg, Amy Goodman, William Sinkford, Howard Zinn and Bob West. Christopher Finan, moderator. First Freedom First Solid research and analysis, cutting edge technology, grassroots and web-roots advocacy, a commitment to religious liberty and the democratic process unite in an exciting, thought provoking presentation of America's First Freedom and our opportunity to strengthen religious liberty and the integrity and vitality of our democracy. Speakers: Welton Gaddy, Barry Lynn, Donna Red Wing, Beth Corbin for The Interfaith Alliance Foundation and Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Too Much Like Right: Ben Cohen's Peace Priorities Ben Cohen, cofounder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, demonstrates that a small shift in defense spending could impact positively America's top domestic priorities in education, health care, and energy independence. Cohen's program presents this shift strikingly with Oreo Cookies and then presents his 50 steps for peace. A Conversation About Race and Class: Who Is Worthy of Our Efforts? William E. Cross, Jr. will argue that the discourse on race and class seeks to clarify “Who is worthy of our efforts to promote justice, equity and compassion for all?” Dr. Cross will make frequent reference to Hurricane Katrina in explicating his thesis. Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith What exactly is a 'vocabulary of faith'? And how does it relate to or differ from a 'language of reverence'? How should religious liberals talk about issues of ultimate meaning in the larger world? Noted spiritual writer Kathleen Norris will share her ideas with us.

One of the most successful folk/pop duos in recording history, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have carved out an enduring career that is due largely to the fierce loyalty of their fans. After over two decades and eight studio albums together, Ray and Saliers, known to their legion of fans as Indigo Girls, have played thousands of shows. They've operated within the music industry, without ever being a product of that industry, gaining the respect of their peers, not to mention an extremely loyal fan base. Regardless of which way the pop culture breezes are blowing, who is topping the pop charts, who is dominating fashion magazine covers, or who is getting played on the radio, an Indigo Girls' concert experience remains a constant. From her rootsy bell-clear voice to the palpable emotion that seeps through her songs, everything about this performer from rural Washington state is the real deal.

"Nanotechnology and Alternative Energy" with presentation by Dr. Shankar B. Rananavare, research associate professor of chemistry at Portland State University http://www.chem.pdx.edu/~ranavas/shankar11a.html Forums are free and open to the public but registration is required - visit http://www.omsi.edu/forum to register Climate change concerns, rising energy costs, and dwindling natural resources are causing people everywhere take a closer look at the relationship between human activity and our environment. The emerging field of nanotechnology presents great promise to address these issues, but it carries a great deal of uncertainty - and perhaps its own environmental risks. In this forum, participants become the decision makers, weighing the possible environmental benefits of nanotechnology against its potential pitfalls. Should the bulk of research funding be dedicated to the implementation of existing technologies and to conservation, or should more effort be dedicated to designing new nanotechnologies that might be of greater long-term impact? Forum participants will have an opportunity to hear from experts and engage in small-group discussions. Questions? Call 503.797.4517 or email forum@omsi.edu
