The Philadelphia based group, The Roots, showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic's "hip-hop band" philosophy of the mid-'80s, by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio. Although their album work has been inconsistent, more intent on building grooves than pushing songs, The Roots' live shows are among the best in the business. A long time force in the hip-hop genre, Kane's lyrical boasts are the stuff of legend.

Coming from a musical family of six sisters and brothers, and a father who played the organ, he started to play piano and guitar at an early age. He switched over to the bass guitar, playing in a gospel choir in his hometown when he was 12. At 18 he moved to norwegian city Trondheim, where he picked up the acoustic bass, and decided he wanted to study at the music academy there, a school that has shaped many of the influental figureheads of the norwegian contemporary scene today. In 1992 he got into the school, and studied there for three years with bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth, saxophonist Jon-Paal Inderberg and pianist Erling Aksdal.

Sean’s fifth and newest release, Flowering Spade (2007), marks the first time Hayes has ever recorded in a studio. Most of the album was recorded live in the studio with horns, accordion and marimba overdubbed. Hayes authored the entirety of Flowering Spade’s thirteen unique songs; they span different moods, tempos, and styles, making for quite a nice ride. Sean has recently been seen touring the US, UK and Europe – headlining, playing residencies, sharing co-bills or support slots and sometimes with frequent touring partner Jolie Holland. Following the release of Flowering Spade, Sean is hitting the road again – thankfully with his addictive, soulful groove and weathered, acoustic dance-ability in tow.
