The popular Opera Boston Underground expands its horizons as it returns to the Lizard Lounge (1667 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge) on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008. The program, called "Quickies" will feature three or four semi-staged short operas, in celebration of Valentines Day. The show is 21+ and there is an $8 cover charge. Doors open at 7 and the show starts at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets are NOT available. "Quickies" will feature Lukas Foss' Introductions and Good-Byes (1960), a nine-minute opera that mimics the unfolding of a cocktail party, and Samuel Barber's A Hand of Bridge (1959), a nine minute opera that takes place as two couples play, well, a hand of bridge. Both of these "Quickies" feature a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti. One or two more short operas to be performed will be announced later. Opera Boston Underground will be hosted by Opera Boston Music Director Gil Rose, as well as mezzo Glorivy Arroyo and tenor Christian Figueroa, with piano accompaniment by Angela Gooch, and appearances by other young Company singers. Opera Boston seeks to extend its reach by providing non-traditional venues for opera performance. Not only will it demystify opera for new audience, but it also gives young Opera Boston singers the chance to try out different repertoire in a fun, informal setting. For more information about Opera Boston Underground, call (617) 451-3388.
