(BOSTON) The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) presents the Boston premiere of Alice Neel (2007) by Andrew Neel. This documentary about American painter Alice Neel (1900-1984) tells the story of her struggles as a painter who defied convention, a woman and a single mother. The filmmaker, her grandson Andrew Neel, will be present for a post-screening Q & A. There will be one screening on Sunday, August 19 at 3 pm. 35mm, 81 min. Tickets are $10; $8 ICA members, students, and seniors, and can be purchased at icaboston.org, from the ICA box office, by phone at (617) 478-3103 during regular museum hours, or at the box office one hour before program. Alice Neel was one of the great portrait painters of the 20th century. She reinvented the genre of portraiture by expressing the inner landscape of her varied sitters, among them Andy Warhol, Annie Sprinkle, Bella Abzug, and Allen Ginsberg. Painting a diverse cross-section of humanity, from Communist Party leaders to art world personalities to her neighbors in Spanish Harlem, Neel created a body of work that serves as a social document of New York and America in the 20th Century. The film uses a mix of old family photographs, historical footage and newly filmed interviews to tell the story of her struggle. The premiere of Alice Neel is presented in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The film will be screened at the MFA from August 23 to October 7, 2007. ABOUT THE ICA/BOSTON The Institute of Contemporary Art, located at 100 Northern Avenue, is open Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 am – 5 pm; Thursday and Friday, 10 am – 9 pm; and Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm.
