Branigan Cultural Center will host an exhibit featuring the works of Sally Quillin titled Masks and Costumes from Friday, Aug. 3 through Saturday, Sept. 1. The opening reception will take place during the First Friday Arts Ramble in the Downtown Mall from 5: - 7 p.m. on Friday Aug. 3. Dont be mislead by the title of the show, stated Garland Courts, Director of the Center. Sallys paintings of masks and costumes have so much depth to them they feel like they could be actual masks. Quillin achieves this effect through the use of feathers, beads and other materials on her canvas. This 3-D effect is her distinct trademark. A resident of Las Cruces, Quillin is a member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society, and she has exhibited in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. Since 1991, Quillin has been an instructor in various studios and galleries in the area, including the continuing education program at Dona Ana Community College, Branigan Cultural Center and the White Sands Missile Range Community Service Center. The Branigan Cultural Center is located at 501 N. Main on the northern end of the Downtown Mall and is one of the museums in the Museums System of the city of Las Cruces. The 1935 Pueblo Revival style building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Center is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no charge to tour the exhibits, and the building is fully accessible to all audiences. He worked for nine years on the original watercolor renditions for the project, that he considered one of the most important of his career and an artistic testament. The entire print suite, loaned to the museum by a local collector, illustrates the 100 cantos, or verses, of Dantes allegorical journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. To create prints from the original paintings, two artisans worked for three years to carve 3,500 wood blocks, as each individual image required approximately 35 separate blocks to capture its detail and color. The suite on loan to the Museum was published in 1964. The Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 491 North Main Street (north end of Main Street Downtown.)
