The Portland Cello Project has become an infamously eclectic, multi-genre collaboration of cellists in the Portland area. The ensemble is made up almost entirely of classically trained cellists who have chosen to play music in venues and for audiences not traditionally associated with the cello. Generally an ensemble ranging from 4-10 players, the group has a wide-ranging repertoire, from original works to collaborations with local Portland musicians (Laura Gibson, Peter Broderick, Bright Red Paper, The Ahs, Musee Mecanique, Nick Jaina, and the list goes on...), to classical music by Beethoven and Barber, to jazz and blues improvisations, to bizarre arrangements of songs by Britney Spears and Outkast, to baroque interpretations of Salt 'n Pepa. The Portland Cello Project is a multi-genre collaboration of indie rock, to traditional classical music.
