Friday, September 28, 2007 Brown Bag Conversations Lecture Series (Lectures/Talks) Title: The Nature of Prejudice: Thoughts of a Gay, German-American, Jewish Professor Speaker: Douglas Klahr, Architecture How does prejudice work? What allows Jews, themselves the victims of prejudice, to feel justified in discriminating against gays? As a gay man born into a Jewish New York family that was traumatized by the Holocaust, the Jewish homophobia that I have experienced raises these questions. In this talk I will use my multiple identities as a springboard to examine the roots of prejudice, which at base reduces complex human beings to one-dimensional stereotypes. The City of Arlington will host its first annual Independence Celebration, Light Up the Lake, in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Lake Arlington. This festival will provide the Arlington community a night filled with outdoor entertainment in a patriotic ambiance for the whole family to enjoy. Festivities include live music featuring Silver Rail and The Josh Weathers Band, inflatables, a variety of food, vendors and a lighted boat parade. Admission is free and you are welcome to bring blankets and chairs to relax and enjoy the celebration.
