Tell Maggie Brooks that COMIDA isn't Spanish for Free Lunch

Where: County Office Building

Date: 2007-09-13 18:00:00

Type:

Organizer: Jon Greenbaum of Metro Justice * COMIDA tax breaks cost Monroe County residents over $36 million from 2002-2005. * The overwhelming majority of businesses getting COMIDA subsidies didn’t create the jobs they promised. In fact a third of those businesses cut their workforce after pocketing the tax breaks. Yet Maggie Brook’s COMIDA allowed the dead-beat businesses to keep their subsidies! * COMIDA continues to allow contractors to bring in non-local workers for subsidized construction and allows COMIDA-subsidized business to pay Wal Mart wages. See you there!

Bill Kirchen and The Hi-Risers

Where: The German House

Date: 2008-02-15 20:00:00

Type:

Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step on any stage, play those trademark licks which drove the seminal Commander Cody classic Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten nationwide, and elicit instant recognition for a career thats spanned over 30 years and includes performances with names like Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Doug Sahm, Elvis Costello and Danny Gatton. Named A Titan of the Telecaster by Guitar Player Magazine, he celebrates an American musical tradition where country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, and in the Western swing of Texas and California honky tonks. A Kirchen performance recalls a half century of guitar legends from C&W virtuosos like Merle Travis, Joe Maphis and Grady Martin to rock legends like Scotty Moore, James Burton, Duane Eddy, all the way to Jimi Hendrix and extends their brilliance into the present. This is well captured on his CDs: Raise A Ruckus,Hot Rod Lincoln - Live! and Tied to the Wheel on HighTone Records, featuring the 2001 Grammy nominated original composition “Poultry in Motion”. To hear songs off of Bill’s new CD Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods go to www.myspace.com/billkirchen
