Following a record-setting biking and hiking event in 2007 that saw fundraising and participation numbers increase by over 150 percent, the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s 2008 ROAR: Ride on for Autism Research event will continue to build on last year’s success. On Sunday, April 27th, teams of families and friends will get their legs moving by participating in the activity-filled event that helps raise critically needed funds for autism research. Autism, a complex, life-altering, developmental disorder affects 1 in every 150 children, with prevalence rates continuing to rise. The fourth annual ROAR event will feature activities for participants of all ages, including some new and exciting elements. In addition to the 25 and 10-mile recreational bike rides, serious cyclists will have now the opportunity to tackle the challenging 50-mile route, while families will enjoy the low-mileage, youth fun ride and one of the areas best playgrounds. At ROAR, hiking trails await those who prefer to stay planted on solid ground, providing scenic paths for individuals to hike along by themselves or guided by an Oregon Ridge Nature Center volunteer. Also new this year, the starting line will be noticeably different as they adopt a more festive environment featuring a stilt walker, face painting, and live animals for the kids to experience. Launched last year, “SNORE FOR ROAR” will return for individuals who cannot attend the event but want to make a contribution to autism research. Additionally, online team fundraising will debut this year, allowing participants to form teams, create web pages, and raise money from supporters by securing donations online – all at www.ROAR.kennedykrieger.org. All cyclists and hikers can register either solo or as a team and rest stops and bike repair services will be available along the bike routes. Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI as they are known to their loyal fans) is a punk band in its truest form whose name manifests itself during their incendiary live shows. Their music is a hybrid of Atari-driven electronics with a venomous splash of A.D.D. punk rock.
