Based on the 1988 smash hit film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, this is the 1st National Tour of the huge hit still playing on Broadway. AMTSJ audiences will be the first to see this hilarious production in Northern California. If you don’t want to see this show because it’s “one of the liveliest, funniest, best-performed musicals in years!” (New York Post), then see it because the money helps pay for our grandmother’s cosmetic surgery. Set on the glorious, glamorous Riviera, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a delicious comedy that follows two con artists as they take on the lifestyles of the rich and shameless — and end up with a lot more than they bargain for.

It has been four years since the first photographs of torture and abuse in Abu Ghraib splashed across newspapers nationwide, but these events are not soon forgotten. Drawing on over two hundred hours of frank and intimate interviews with the young men and women who took these pictures and participated in these acts of barbary, Standard Operating Procedure is a book that makes you question the very nature of human beings. It examines this defining moment in the Iraq War, retold through the eyes and cameras of the soldiers inside the prisons. Come hear long time writer for The New Yorker Philip Gourevitch and Academy Award winning director Errol Morris discuss their chilling tale of moral and political reckoning. Rita Hosking original roots music ranges from bluegrass-tinged drive to soulful ballads. Her songs convey mountain stories with a voice that evokes the power of people and place. Homespun Rowdy is a young San Francisco bluegrass band steadily gaining respect in the Bay Area. With a solid appreciation of traditional bluegrass and gospel, Homespun Rowdy performs both the old and the new mixed in with their own original material. Dividing vocal responsibilities across several members of the band and singing around a single microphone keeps the band and audiences on their toes.

The Long Now Foundation's monthly series Seminars About Long-term Thinking http://www.longnow.org/projects/seminars/ Niall Ferguson and Peter Schwartz debate Historian vs. Futurist on Human Progress Seminar hosted by Stewart Brand Distinguished historian Ferguson and renowned futurist Schwartz disagree profoundly on the nature of human progress. Both use scenarios (called "counterfactual history" by Ferguson) to analyze how events play out. Ferguson wrote THE WAR OF THE WORLD (2006), a history of the violence that defined the 20th Century. Schwartz wrote THE ART OF THE LONG VIEW (1991), the standard text on scenario planning, and THE LONG BOOM (1999), on global prosperity in the 21st century. Both speakers regard history as highly contingent. The question is, contingent on what? Monday, April 28th, 02008 Doors open 7:00pm, talk at 7:30pm lasting ~1.5 hours Located at The Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center http://www.fortmason.org/directions/index.shtml $10 suggested donation We recommend you arrive early; priority seating is available for Members of Long Now. https://secure.longnow.org/members/ There will be a reception at the Long Now Museum & Store following the Seminar. http://www.longnow.org/contact/ For more information contact: Danielle Engelman Community Development Director danielle@longnow.org 415.561.6582 x1 The Seminars About Long-term Thinking were started in 02003 to build a coherent, compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking, to help nudge civilization toward Long Now's goal of making long-term thinking automatic and common instead of difficult and rare.

A Meet the Author Event Who: Kevin Phillips, political and economic commentator Event: Over the past months, the U.S. dollar has continued its free fall. In his new book, Bad Money: Reckless Finance, Failed Politics and the Global Crisis of American Capitalism, Kevin Phillips argues that the American economy, despite its global dominance, is built upon a house of cards. Phillips investigates the decline of the dollar over the last six years, proposing this is result of Washington’s financial irresponsibility, as well as its failure in Iraq, and explores the political and commercial implications of its plummeting value. Lastly, he weighs in on what the new administration must do to reverse the tide of wayward megafinance.
